As I understand it, if you choose the July 2010 now you will pay a £50 penalty if you are on dual fuel. If you wait until 1st Sept you will have automatically have been changed to the capped Sep 2010 tariff, so you will incur a £50 penalty if you switch then to the Jul 2010 tariff (if still available on that date).
I believe your best bet is to opt out of the of the capped Sept 2010 tariff via the email now. That will automatically put you on to their Standard tariff on 1st Sep. On that date you can then go to your account online and switch to any other available tariff without penalty.

Hi,another one here.Been on to SP this morning, twice.Asked about Freshstart, its Sp,s care-free side which according to the advisor this morning guaratees me their cheapest rate no matter how I pay as I am over 60 and receive certain benefits. She told me she would e-mailcare-free then e-mail the freshstart tariffs to me as they are considerably lower than their other rates. heard nowt so far.Has anyone come across this before? I havealso had the E-mail and am considering EDF, but the feedback bothers me.I like SP but do not like been held hostage.According to moneysupermarket.com and u-switch I would save 3150 approx but energyhlpline+m/mket do not support EDF.my contract ends this month.you getfed up of changing whenyou have done it several times as all that seems to happen is you are alwaysin limbo wonderin if you have made the right choice and you have it all to do again next year.0

I am currently with Scottish Power with their fixed deal which is finishing at the end of the month and have just filled in the online forms with EDF via top cashback. Reading the previous posts I am now a bit confused - will SP try to charge me a £50 fine due to EDF starting to proceed with a changeover that will not complete for another 4-6 weeks?0

I've done the same today; but also clicked the link to opt out the September 2010 capped option so no cancellation charge can be applied.0 -

You shouldnt be charged, but that dont mean that you wont, as shown on the threads here about SP... it depends who you speak to at SP, there isnt a clarity from the CC about it being applied after you start the process or at switch itself...BASICALLY ITS YOUR CALL.... play safe and wait til September 01st, or risk having to get your money back if they take 50 quid...0 -
Hi, as I read it , by opting out you ensure that after 1st Sept you will not be tied into a 'new' fixed deal as you will be switched to the standard tariff with no penalties from 1st Sept . However if you try to switch too soon you will be charged exit fees because your 'old' contract still wont end until 30th Aug. I would leave a transfer request until after the 17th Aug as the new supplier usually waits 14 days before actioning the transfer. ( 14 day cooling off period.)0

I would say that is the wrong way round - it is the cooling off period that is 'dodgy' and the 28 days notice that is 'safe'.
By which I mean you can apply 27 days before the end of the contract. (Of course, 14 days before is later so is safe too but not for the reason implied.)
The one thing you should not do is apply six weeks before.
Of course, as well as contacting the new supplier to initiate the switch you also have to contact the incumbent to tell them you want to change to a penalty free tariff.0
