I'm no expert but i have opted out of the capped price package via the E-Mail, because i don't want to be tied in with SP for another 12 months, i would advise you do the same just in case EDF don't get there application in before the 31st august, if you don't opt out SP will assume you want to join there capped price deal and then you are tied in for another twelve months and will have to pay the penalty charge when you switch to EDF, at least with the monthly direct debit you are not in any way tied in and can move on at any time without penalty, that's how i understand how it works anyway.0 -
Ok, I have spent so much time deliberating, I have opted out of the SP new capped rate and have now gone through Topcashback and opted for EDF. Based on my current usage, they have quoted figures of £30 a month less for dual fuel.
Will have to wait to see if it tracks, and if the EDF figures are correct. You're only young once, but you can be immature forever0 -

I have also opted out to avoid any cancellation charges after 1st Sept. I will probably switch to a new supplier via a cashback site next week. In the meantime I will get SP on 1st Sep to change me from Standard tariff to Online Energy Saver 6 as it is cheaper and doesn't have a cancellation penalty (even if I'm only on it for a few weeks).

The only thing that's stopping me switching right now is if SP recieve the application to switch before the 31st august, will they charge the £50 which there customer service personnel have said they will do,once they have taken the monies, it's going to be a difficult task getting it back from them although the £60 cashback does cancel out this problem rather nicely!!!0 -
I have phoned 3 times over the last couple of days and was told twice that it does not go on the date they recieve the application but the change over date which by now will be well into September.
Also the Scottish power rep on here has also told us the same thing - I have also just called again and spoken to another customer service rep who has told me that as long as I am still getting gas from them and have my direct debit set up I wont get charged.
I wonder if we can get Martin to clarify. My colleague would appear to been confused on this occasion Mr Chips as the cancellation feel only applies if your supply actually leaves us before the expiry date, not if you make an application prior to 31 August.
If I can be of any further help, please let me know

Keeping an eye on this myself as want to make the switch to EDF.
Has anyone actually asked the question when will the EDF online 5 offer end? Martin says in his email very soon but no one knows for sure?
Used them last year before going to the SP capped and the customer service was second to none! Brilliant!0 -
I switched on Wednesday to EDF, and TopCashBack had tracked it within 24 hours0

Right, I have taken the plunge and opted out of Capped Price Energy September 2010, then I will phone Scottish Power in the next week or so, as suggested earlier, to find out what my best option with them really is.
Then I will compare this via an energy comparison site and take a view from there.A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion0 -
I have the current capped rate with SP and got all the info by letter. I think it is unfair to presume that you want to stick with them on another fixed rate and as for the charge for getting out of it, I am sure I was told at the time of signing up last year that there was no charge to leave them, I must read my paperwork. I only went back to SP for their capped rate, I had previously been with Atlantic Electric and Gas who were the cheapest, I wish I'd never left them. SP just seem to complicate everything and their customer service is terrible. I was previously over £200 in credit with them a few years ago when I was first with them and they wouldn't refund me the money. They said as they didn't have a current gas reading they couldn't give me the money and they were told they could come to the outside of my house anytime and read the meter as the gas one is outside. There was nothing stopping them getting access to the meter, eventually I got my money back. Funnily enough I can't remember the last time anyone came and read either of my meters, wonder how much I am in credit this time??? Must be a bill due soon, I always check the readings to see how far out they are anyway.
Suppose I had better trawl through USwitch and see what better options there are before the end of the month.0 -
I am useless at all this energy comparison stuff can anyone help.
I have been on the 2008 capped tariff with SP and like you all it is ending at the end of August. I am happy to stay with SP but I don't want to tie myself into another year of capped energy with them, I had a look at my account online and in the 'change my service' section I found Discounted Energy online NSC.Our Discounted Energy July 2010 Offer is guaranteed to remain 3% below our standard monthly Direct Debit prices until July 2010. You'll have no more paper bills, a discount for managing your account online and our No Standing Charge option means that no daily service charge is applied to your fuel charges.
which I would quite like to change to at the end of August, but how do I go about doing this?
Do I select the option on the email to opt out of capping and take it from there, but I understand that will just leave me signed to the standard direct debit tariff or do I sign up for this online via my account? It's very confusing.0
