I input my gas and elec.readings on 15th August - the gas is miles over in the "estimates" they have input automatically for 31st August - Have we had an Arctic snap at the SP data centre ????
  • Hi

Can anyone tell me if the previous fixed rates are lower than the current capped rates? If so, is that for both fuels?
    Thanks

    Hi all

It looks like a similar thing has happened to me as to many others.

I opted out via the email and also called a Customer Service Rep on the 25th August asking to opt out of the Fixed Rate Tarriff and to be placed on the standard tarriff, from the end of August when the Fixed Price Energy 2009 ended.

Having checked my online account today I can see that my service is 'Online Energy - Capped Rate' (). I've already started the ball rolling on my move to EDF.

I have PMed Craig the SP rep' on the board to see if he can ensure that I am placed on the standard tarriff. Should I also use the 'Change my service' links on the online account management or have I missed my chance and whatever happens I will be charged the cancellation fee? If this is a new contract (one that I don't want!) surely I have a two week 'cooling off' period in which I can change my SP tarriff to ensure I don't incur a charge during my move to EDF.
  • My Cap was due to end Aug 31st and did not get any emails telling me what I would be moving too. Have checked using online account and tells me that Im on Online Energy - Capped Rate?

Not sure what to do myself. Paying £89 a month for G&E for 2 bed end terrace house. Both work so house is empty in the day. Can anybody advise me what to do please?

If you read the previous posts on this thread I beleive that you have untill the 31st Sept to opt out of 2010 fixed price deal (if that's what they have automaticaly put you onto) so don't panic I would ring them up on 0800 400 200 and opt out now and ask for confirmation via E-Mail, then you are clear to switch whenever you want. without penalty.

Had a phone call from a Scottish Power rep earlier this evening. He asked why I was switching, so I told him my capped rate was ending and I found a cheaper price.

He asked me who I was going to and how much I was paying, so I told him EDF. He asked how had found them, I told him comparison sites, which he rubbished, saying they were inaccurate.

Now EDF has calculated my direct debit at approx £19, which seems stupidly low, especially when compared to SP's rate which varied between £57 and £78.

So he pointed out that this was low and that I would be in debt to EDF. I told him I would rather be earning interest off the money than some big power company having it.

He offered me two different packages, one capped and one flex and fix (I think) but he said the direct debit would be around £65.

I told him I'd stay with EDF for now, since I'd done the work in swapping. He said, what work, we do all the work.

In the end I told him I'd stick with EDf and if they turned out to be no good, I'd switch back.

In a nut shell, he rubbished comparison sites, EDF, and me switching. Makes me wish I'd told him I wasn't happy at being switched to another capped rate unless I opted out.

He's right about comparison sites being rubbish but EDF is better than any current deal SP can offer, by about £100pa in my case. Also if you switch to EDF via TopCashBack you'll get £60 cashback.

I did switch via a cashback site. I did some calculatuions based on my previous bills.

EDF's electricity is significantly cheaper than SP's.

SP's gas is cheaper than EDF's. By about £50 over the course of the year.

But EDF's dual fuel and gas discounts, along with the cash back cancel out that £50.

So I will be better off having switched.

As an update to my own message....

The Scottish Power Representative, Craig, has been absolutely wonderful in managing my request and extremely prompt and polite he was too! Craig, your help has been much appreciated.
