Same story as many others here - clicked the link on the email to opt out of the new capped rate package. Didn't really feel comfortable about the lack of positive confirmation apart from screen captures of the confirmation web page (which could be disputed) and was about to seek more concrete confirmation when I got the Online Energy Saver 6 offer email. This at least confirmed that they had received and would act on my opt out request.
Now on checking my online account it shows that I have been transferred the "online energy - capped rate" product! At the moment I'm assuming this is just a case of SP's failure to process the volume of requests in time and they'll get through the backlog in the next few days. Not too concerned as I have proof that I have opted out so won't incurr any penalties when my transfer to Eon goes through, but I'll keep an eye on it and chase them up if it doesn't change in the next week or so.

** UPDATED 04/09/2009 - checked online account this morning and it has converted to the Online Standard Package overnight **
  • I logged on last night & found that I was also on 'Online Energy Capped Rate NSC'.

Called SP straight away & was told that they had absolutely loads of opt-outs to process. Some would be done last night, the next lot around the 15th and the rest at the end of the month. With all due respect, this was from a helpful call centre bloke - they could end up processing them quicker than that.

I guess the only thing to do is keep checking every couple of days.
  • I am with Scottish Power at the moment and about to move to either EDF or e-on.

Could someone please advise me that when using energy price comparisons ie energyhelpline,do you include VAT in the figures that you provide them ?

Also I am in credit with SP and what happens to that? Many thanks.

rushal, last year virtually all the financial websites were urging us to fix as it appeared widely accepted that there was going to be a big hike in prices in the Winter period (which did happen)
This year there doesn't appear to be the same message so I , for one, am taking a calculated risk with an online discount saver for a year It'll actually be ~ £80 cheaper than this past years SP deal (if the prices stay the same and if my usage is the same) - AND £250 cheaper than SP's first capped offer!!

I agree, we were urged to fix last year, but it appears there's a war going on this year much to everyone's relief

To be honest coming off of the SP fixed deal and moving onto the EDF deal, i was starting to worry about our prices going up. But alas, moving to EDF this year is going to save us nearly £350, big bonus in my book.

Of course, being on the EDF Tariff means that if we get a hint that the prices are going to rise again means we can switch to a fixed tariff as and when we need to without incurring a penalty charge. Good on ya EDF! Shame on you SP!

It appears that the 3% discounted option is now showing on the web site to enable a transfer from the Cap.

I actioned this the other night, it is not the online 6 however and is more expensive

It appears to be identical but costs £ 50 more a year (for me), I phoned them up and to be fair the customer service was exemplary ( it was around Mcr area so it would be icon7.gif) anyway they switched me on to online 6 and gave me the following explanation for the difference. The number BTW 01925 515 121

Discounted energy online fuel NSC (the option on the website) is guaranteed to be 3% lower than standard tariff, Whereas Online energy saver6 NSC is a minimum of 3% and currently it is more than 3%, so obviously this is the one to go for out of those two options.

BTW my monthly direct debit has reduced by 23% on switching from the fixed onto the new tariff , anyone else know what there new DD will be.

    Hope this helps.

Edit, I have looked at the tariffs and I cannot see why they have dropped my DD, should have gone up by 10%, unless of course they are planning a big price reduction.icon7.gif and pigs might fly  having said that oil and gas prices are well down on last summer.

SteveJ, this is what i found when i looked into this last month. I have since switched to EDF:

I'm also on the SP FP tariff to end Aug 2009 and on my present usage I pay £1510 pa.

Looking at an SP tariff to switch to, it seems that Online Energy Saver 6 to 31/07/10 is the cheapest, however, on my present usage my bill would increase to £1560 pa (£50 or 3.3%)

Looking at the EDF Online Tariff 5 to July 2010 and again on the same usage, my bill would decrease to £1454 pa (-£56 or -3.7%)

So it looks like I can save £106 pa by switching to EDF after the end of August. (Plus any cashback that might be available)

As someone said in an earlier post, SP had better come up with a better tariff quickly or they will be losing customers in droves.

According to the comparison sites EDF is only about £30ish cheaper, so I didn't bother switching (SP 6 was fairly near the top of the list). SP did say that the 12 comparison sites are under investigation, after I pointed out that there was a £50 discrepancy beteween their two 3% discount tariffs (the first time I phoned, sales staff).

I would agree that the comparison sites are not reliable and I never use them.

I always calculate the annual costs myself using my known annual consumption, the Power Suppliers' published tariffs and applying the various discounts for dual fuel, DD payment etc.

It only takes a few minutes to do this in Excel.
