My wife and I recently travelled to Marseille from Edinburgh and back. We did all the right things, booked on line, paid with Visa Electron, checked in on line, had suitcases which fitted the criteria 50x40x25, were within the required 10kg weight limit (including my wife's hanbag in her case), toiletries all under 100ml in prescribed see through sealable bags, arrived 2hrs 30 mins before flight departure time, avoided bag drop queue, went through security, sat and waited for flight to be called.

I'm doing the above for the fist time - hand luggage only and online check-in.
Where/when do they check your hand luggage for size/weight, is this at security or when boarding the plane?
Do I need to do anything BUT go straight to security - therefore arriving the usual "2 hours" early isn't really needed, as most of that is usually queing for check-in (or now bag drop!)

Checking your luggage for size and weight varies enormously from airport to airport and staff member to staff member. Not very satisfactory but that is our experience.

There is a Ryanair metal frame at all the airports they fly from or to where you can check the size of your hand luggage. If it fits you are ok, if it doesn't then you may have a problem. In February at Weeze Airport the airport staff had a set of scales checking weight of bags before you even got to security. In July at Marseille nobody formally checked anything other than the normal process of taking luggage through security. If they checked for size and weight they didn't make it obvious and since this was not the same place as the boarding pass was checked I don't see how they would know which airline you are flying with since different airlines have different size and weight restrictions.

When you are boarding the plane the staff greeting you are giving you the once over and if there was anything obviously oversize or overweight they would quickly pick up on it but there is nothing formal as you board the plane.

We like to arrive well early just in case there is a queue at security or there is any other hold up and we have come to accept that part of the budget airline experience is to get there early and hang about for a couple of hours or to look at it another way, give you two hours leeway should there be a problem.

For instance at both Edinburgh and London Gatwick the possible departure gates can be miles away, if you are at Beauvais or Weeze you don't have far to go. The choice of arrival time is yours.

With hand luggage only you don't need to go anywhere near the bag drop off queue, proceed straight to security.

    Happy flying!!

Does this mean that I'll get £152.73 taxes back (minus administration fee of £16), since the fares themselves were very cheap?

No, you won't get the Fees & Charges, back.

    Nonsense.

Ryanair may like to do such a thing, but they wouldn't be able to advertise flights for less than 20 pounds under such a system.

    hi all
been thinking of poping over to ireland for a few days and notice that with Ryanair it says,
    online check-in fee
Ryanair regularly runs £5 flight sales, some of which “include all taxes and charges”. The beauty of these is that with these sales, you don’t have to pay the £5 each way online check-in fee

now the flight i am looking at includes all taxes and charges and says Free Online Check in ??
do i need to still go on line to get boarding pass? does it mean that i just dont have to pay to use it and would i have to do the same , get online in ireland to get my boarding pass?
first time using Ryanair for 12 years, simple when you just booked your flight and that was that. none of these hidden costs.

Also can anyone recommend the best carry on bag for Ryanair, considering limits in size and weight.
    The restrict size to 55cm x 40cm x 20cm and weight to 10 kg.

Yes you need to go on line and print out your own boarding pass. Everyone flying with Ryanair has to do it. If you miss it you will have to pay £40 to get one at the airport. The difference is you do not have to pay the online check in fee of £5.
