Hand luggage only discussion

On the "cheap-parking-at-the-airport" thread, a motorcyclist says you can take a helmet as an essential piece of safety equipment in addition to your normal hand baggage??
But it was Ryanair that tried to charge extra for wheelchairs ? - so I have a feeling you might have a problem convincing the staff.0 -
In relation to Ryanair and their stipulated size of hand baggage 55 x 40 x 20cm. Most hand luggage have wheels, that push the size of the baggage over the size catered for in the actual measuring frame that Ryanair place your bag into.
My Wife has been caught out with this 1 cm above, and you pay £35 for it to go into the hold.
I have since done a slight modification on the hand luggage. Most wheels are riveted onto the actual case. What I have done, I have drilled out these rivets, and replaced them with small bolts with a removable screw head. The type that are used on electrical terminals.
This means that the wheels can be removed quiet easily prior to going onto the plane. The reason I say prior to going onto the plane, is because, its never in the baggage hall where you are challenged, its at the gate, prior to boarding. This is where they are hitting passengers wallets. Just a devious way to beat a devious man!!0 -
We've done that too.0

You can be challenged before you go through security.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -

thats what i had to do last year at Gatwick to get on a Clickair flight. The stand at the bottom of the case was a few mm over the limit, so i smashed it off in front of the stunned guards and saved the £16 check-in fee0 -

spanish bar stewards!! this sort of thing really annoys me and stresses me out before I go on holiday and when I'm getting ready to come home! It shouldn't be like this, when will someone do something about it??:mad:0 -
I'm sorry but the size of the handluggage need to be dramatically reduced. Flying a couple of weeks ago with easyjet it was rediculous, almost all of the plane went on the those wheely cases resulting not everyone being able to put theirs in the over headlockers.
I ended up with my handbag under the seat infront of me resulting in even more cramped up space.
Two people were actually removed from the plane due to the arguments that started up over space for the handluggage and some peoples ended up in the hold as there just wasnt anywhere for it to go.
Time for it to change !0 -
is there any legal reason why i cant buy an extra seat for my luggage if it is a cheap fllight surely the weight allowance of a seat would make this a cheaper option as one seat space could surely hold two bags0

Best hand luggage I found for Ryanair was an "overnight holdall" from Tesco - can't find it on the website, but it's basically the medium-sized one on this package. My Tesco had loads of these in boxes, but also sold the luggage separately - the holdall came to £6 total.
Fits in loads of stuff, and always managed to travel with it. It squashes quite well too, so not a problem for the mesh cages and cardboard boxes! Best thing is - it weighs almost nothing.0
