Re tinned food: I should think that if it were something like corned beef it would be ok but a tin of soup woul be a no no. I guess with vaseline if it gets warm-ish it goes into liquid. Mind you so does corned beef!

One only item I struggle with when taking cabin luggage only is contact lense solution. Ok, you can buy 100ml bottles of it but it's dearer than buying my usual 360ml bottles (which I buy in bulk from CostCo) so it feels wrong buying it! In the past I've decanted my own into small plastic bottles but it's not very sterline that way. Any suggestions?

I got this 60ml one at what they say is a handling charge!

PS - cant post links, silly

  • If you need to take medicines in bottles greater than 100ml size, get a doctors note. This will be accepted at security so no need to decant your medicines.
Containers larger than 100ml (excluding essential medicines) will not be allowed through the security point even if they are only part full.

    Hi
My hand luggage case measures 55x 40 x 20cms which is the maximum size for Ryan air hand luggage. BUT the handle, and metal stand on the bottom of the case does not include these dimensions . Does this mean I am over the max size allowance:confused:?
My Wife was checked in at Birmingham airport, the girl on the check in desk allowed her to go through with hand luggage. Once at the gate ready to board, at least 25 passengers on this flight i9ncluding my wife were stopped by Ryanair staff stating that the hand luggage was too big(It was'nt) They made her pay £35 and told her it would have to go in the hold.I believe that a scam is in operation and have reported the facts to Trading Standards in Birmingham for their investigation.

Did you not try it in the cage? There should have been one at the boarding gate. I would have demanded especially if 35 of you were charged that they be sized in one.
  • Just read through this thread - lots of useful tips - thanks!

I don't think I saw this and wondered if anyone knows if it would work...
my rucksack is 20 cm deep, 50 cm high and 30 cm wide - I really want to take a rucksack not a case so I can carry it around easily after checking out of the hotel. But...I know I'm not taking full advantage of the available size with my narrower bag. It does, however, have straps on the side - do you think I could strap something, eg, a jumper, on the side if it's within the size restriction?

The 55 40 20 (cm) backpacks are now back in stock on Amazon. I have been trying to obtain one for weeks and finally bought one.
I haven't been on a flight with it yet but it is bigger than I thought it would be, Seems good quality.
As well as Amazon , also for sale here http://backpackingshop.co.uk/Backpacks/

From easyjet t&c's (that you tick a box to say you have read when booking!!!):

"Save where the limits set locally are more restrictive, passengers are permitted one standard piece of hand baggage to a volume limit of 55x40x20cm (including wheels and pockets) (“Standard Hand Baggage”). It must fit without force into the gauges provided at check-in or departure gates. No weight restriction applies within reasonable limits — i.e. a passenger must be able to place the piece of luggage safely in the overhead storage bins without assistance.

In addition to the “Standard Hand Baggage” you may also carry:
    (a) one of the following: An overcoat; an umbrella, or a shawl; and
    (b) one standard size carrier bag of goods purchased from the departure airport."

I have travelled with Easyjet quite a lot recently and they are getting very strict now, and many passengers are being stopped and charged at the gate, and their bag being put in the hold.

One piece of hand luggage means ONE piece!! including lap tops, hand bags, camera's etc., and your bag needs to fit in the cage completely, including wheels and handles etc.

At least easyjet allow a carrier bag of duty free purchases extra, ryanair don't!

Easyjet seems to bigger allowance to what others i thinking

    Each passenger is permitted
    • one standard piece of hand baggage to maximum dimensions of 56x45x25cm this is from thier website also on my flight information

I put the wifes primrose oil in a money bag ( the ones for change from banks) last month. I wouldn`t worry at all. This was just to save room/weight.

Glass containers are allowed anyhow. Take for example a large glass bottle of vodka from the duty free shop.
