That ridiculous password is the only good thing about TalkTalk, to many people use 'easy to remember' password which are easily 'cracked' and allows others to gain access to your email account.

Your line is syncing at 2mbit, so it sounds you are still on a BT wholesale 2mbit product, and awaiting for the exchange to have TalkTalks equipment in it.

When I was with TalkTalk for the 2.5 months, the connection was unusable, I was getting 10, 15, 20+ disconnections an hour, downloads at 0.5k/s, ropey email (though I didn't have to rely on their email, I learnt from back in the mid to late 1990s to have my own domain name, as I used many different ISPs). Previously and afterwards my Pipex connection was rock solid.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

If you read this site at the time of launch you cant say you were not warned about this Cowboy Outfit.
  • Ok, i know a few people with talktalk whos never had any rpoblems, so im interested in saving loads of money per month.

    quick question:

IF i join, i already have broadband, when i get my MAC code, does it still take as long to connect my broadband? i mean surely with a MAC code it should be quicker?

When migrating broadband providers using a MAC key it takes about 10 days before the switch date.

The actual switching doesn't take long at all.

Sometime between 0:00 and 02:00 you may find your connection drop, you just then enter your new user name and password from your new provider and you are back up and running, downtime only a couple of minutes.

  • wow - thanks for the quick reply :D

So knowing that I'm going to use a MAC code, why do TalkTalk claim I won't have broadband till September?

Is this just a standard message for new customers?

(Sorry if I'm asking a dumb question, I'm just not technical :embarasse

Right, sounds like they are holding off until they have put their own equipment in the exchange, up until recently all ISPs resold a BT wholesale product, over the last few months or more, some ISPs have been unbundling (LLU) and having their own equipment put in the exchange and therefore not have to pay BT for a BT Wholesale product, TalkTalk could give you the choice of having the BT Wholesale product like they had been supplying all this time and charge the extra it costs, or make you wait until they get their equipment in, they probably want to wait otherwise for your connection they'd have to pay BT twice for enabling you.

TalkTalk was bad enough when they were reselling a BT wholesale product, as BT made sure that not too many people were connected to each piece of equipment at the exchange, what made TalkTalk so poor is they just don't have the capacity on their own network, once TalkTalk get their own equipment in the exchange, they will cram more connections onto it per piece of equipment, and still have not enough 'pipes' on their network to support their customers.

TalkTalk have been going for around 2 years now in broadband, and it hasn't got any better, now if all you want it to read the odd email (though don't rely on TalkTalk's email service) and view the odd webpage here and there it maybe OK, but expect to have several disconnections per hour, their email system down often, no newsgroup access as it went down about a year ago and they haven't managed to get it back up and running again, and expect to find many 'page cannot be displayed' as their connection is ropey, just don't expect it to be any use for gaming, VoIP, P2P or downloading.

If email is important to you, either use an hotmail, gmail, yahoo account or better still get a domain name and pay for pop3/smtp email access.

I am sooooo incensed with Carphone warehouse, I wish I had NEVER attempted to join. My broadband live date was end of June, I gave them my MAC code, Wednesday this week I got home to discover my Tiscali connection had been cancelled. However, as I do not have the talk talk welcome pack, cd and modem I cannot connect to the internet. I have been told basically I will have to wait until to 4 weeks - yep FOUR weeks to get connected. I work as a mystery shopper as well as other things and my internet is essential. They don't care. I tried all day to get through, eventually on phone call 30 got thru and was put on hold for 35 minutes. The indian call centre worker told me to go to my local carphone warehouse and pick up the cd and modem. I tried, - they didn't have a clue what I was talking about and said it was bad information. I now have no internet and have to quickly check in work or at the local library.

I have my account details and password but cannot access my broadband. I cursed the day I tried to switch - please, take this into account if you are deciding, their customer services is sooooo appalling, they do not answer the calls and they give duff info.

In the meantime, I am MAD and losing work and money - Welshy

BexTech - in my naviety I jumped on the bandwagon and I am now suffering the consequences. My first phone bill with them was also £47 so wonder if it was such a good deal. But it's the feeling of being left high and dry and them not caring, (when I eventually get through to them)
