I signed up for this on the 11th April and my previous supplier (Wanadoo) cocked up and cancelled the account instead of giving a MAC number, so no internet at home, can't work out how to revert to dial up.

E-mailed TT to tell them this but not heard anything!!

    Questions.
    1. Has anyone actually got broadband yet (who was not previously with TT) AND
    2. Does anyone have a telephone number for their customer services, I can't find one.

    Getting withdrawa; symptoms!

Customer Care is on 0870 087 0168 only free to call from a TT landline.Expect a long wait for them to answer!!!

Its unlikely that anyone has got BB yet, it takes up to three weeks for them provide Landline for starters, and service has only been launched about two weeks.

I looked in to getting the deal for a family member but they couldn't get it. TT could offer an alternative package though, you could have the phone line in about a month which i thought was probably reasonable.
They gave an installation date for the broadband as JULY!!!

    Others have been told August.

Beware too that they specifiy that the (18 month) contract starts as soon as the phone line is 'delivered' - so that's when the £70 termination fee kicks in.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Does anybody know if TT tell you the speed (via the LLU) at which you will get before you sign-up with them?

Only asking because if not, a person could sign-up to this free bb for the minimum term of 18months and expect to get around the 8meg when in fact depending on distance from the exchange you may only get 512k or 1mb instead but you may not know this until it is installed which appears to around July/August currently!

As far as i am aware TT do not support outgoing texts from your landline.

  • I have to say, this deal looks worse and worse by the day; it's certainly far from "free", the lock-in would be worrying in any circumstances and the general concensus here is that TT's customer service is rubbish... And yet, more and more people are signing up... What gives?

Latest disturbing news comes from adslguide.org who question the ability of TT to cope with the demand currently generated by the massive media hype that this marketing deal is getting. They quote a report from reuters.co.uk that claimed 25,000 people signed up for the £20.99 offer by 13th April. Apparently this was five times more than the company expected, and may lead to serious problems with how fast TalkTalk get consumers onto their package, and the full suite of services up and running.

Quote: "If demand for the service is very high, then it may prove very costly if TT have to place hundreds of thousands of customers on a BT Wholesale IPstream service while it rolls out its own fully unbundled service. A single 622Mbps BT Central that can support up to 32,000 users costs around £140,000 per month, and each ADSL line has a charge of £8.40 per month. There are also long lead times of something like sixty working days to install a large BT Central, so if demand continues to exceed expectations there may be delays for customers.

It is not impossible that TalkTalk may move people onto the phone part of package at £20.99, using wholesale line rental to offer the calls package, and since the broadband is simply a free service, connect people up to this as and when possible. The contract seems to allow for the start of billing from when the calls part is up and running, rather than having to provide the free broadband service at the same time."

Hmmm, so the argument would be that you could end up paying the £20.99 charge for quite some time (which is for the Talk Plan 3 element of the package that you would be receiving from day one) while you wait for the "free" broadband to be supplied. As there is no separate charge for the broadband element you'd couldn't even ask/expect for any reduction in price while it was not supplied...

CAll me cynical, but somehow I suspect that Charles Dunston has thought this offer through rather better than many of the people that might be applying...
