Hello folks,
Just thought I'd share one of my revelations with you all, I know it's hardly money saving but I forked out for a dyson about 2 years ago and it was the best £200 I ever spent, I have a long haired collie dog and I would have had a nervous breakdown without it.
Anyway it's brilliant and does the job like a dream, but in a house in the hebridies with 2 smokers bad weather and more often than not the smell of wet dog the place can get to smelling foosty.
I know most of you swear by bicarb and vinegar but my version of air freshener is slightly different.
Generally I'm quite allergic to airfresheners, pot pouris and what not and sneeze for hours after they'e been sprayed so I put a few drops of essential oil on the filters inside the dyson and the place smells fantastic afterwards and lasts for ages before you have to re-oil the filters, you can use anything really but I normally use olbas oil because it clears the sinuses in a good way!
So that's my tip of the day folks, I hope it might be of use to somebody.

Thanks for this, we have a henry and it does wiff a bit, as we have 2 dogs and 2 cats. Next time I change the bag, I'll have a look to see where I can put a few drops of essential oil, probably use lavendar as my son loves this smell, and might get him helping out with the vaccuming now and again.

Hi
For those of us with a bag in our hoover a small amount of washing powder in the bag provides a nice smell. It gives the same effect as those fragranced bags that are available at the supermarkets.Give it a go !!Casey0 -
I do this with our Electrolux - its ancient and uses a paper bag, but has a little grille behind which you can slip a piece of kitchen paper with some essential oil. Smells lovely.
Unlike the Morphy Richards which lives downstairs (our house is on 3 floors). It uses a fabric bag (its a nightmare) which smelled truly awesome after I accidentally dipped the nozzle in the dog's water bowl and sucked up a good slurp of the wet stuff! Its dried out now, but I'll definitely try the washing powder idea - should work a treat!
:hello: I'm very well, considering the state I'm in. :hello:Weight loss since 2 March 10 : 13lbs0 -
LOL, Yeah the bad smell from mine originated when I hoovered up some liquid by mistake too, glad I'm not the only one who has these blunders!0

Thank you for this. I bought a dyson from a car boot sale a few weeks ago. When I started using it there was a strong smell of wet dog and cigarette smoke. Not a good combination:rolleyes: . I washed the filters, and whilst much better the smell has never fully gone.0

Hi everyone
Can anyone tell me is it safe to wash the filters out of a bagless hoover, was thinking about just soaking them in stardrops and hanging them out side on the line, while its still fine cos mine i am ashamed to say really smell, and i hate hoovering - If i can;t looks like i will have to buy some new ones, and just priced them they are about £10.00 for the set, which i can not really afford at the moment.
Or does anyone have any ideas how to get rid of the smell.
Thanks guysHoping that when I start looking after the pennies, and the pounds will take care of them selves :j0 -
The one in my dyson is washable. It should tell you in your handbook. Almost certainly will be washable if it's a bagless VC, but check the instructions first. Would suggest washing them in one of those laundry nets for washing lingerie (available from pound shops), and make sure you wash them with something dark!
As for smell, you could try a vacuum freshener (good old pound shop again - usually 12/16 little fruit-scented rolls that you just drop into VC. Or you could try a cotton-wool ball with a few drops of essential oil - citrus again usually the best; flowery scents tend to be a bit overpowering.0 -
Thanks tawnyowls - but just checked my instructions and its a big NO NO for washing the filters, will have to replace them at the end of the month. but for the time being will try some essintial oil on a cotton wool ball.
Thanks again for your advice.Hoping that when I start looking after the pennies, and the pounds will take care of them selves :j0
