smelly hoovers

Hi,
I have an electrolux hoover, its only a couple of years old and it started to smell really bad when I use it. We have a dog so I know that is a factor but I can't afford to go buying a new hoover....what can I do?
Does anyone know of stuff to try to help to get rid of the smell!?
We've washed out the filters thoroughly and it's helped a wee bit but the smell is still there. It leaves my house smelling stinky!
oh, forgot to say it a bagless one with a hepa filter.
Any suggestions most welcome and I'll let you know what works best.
Ta.

I do this as well MrsM you only need a couple of drops and it works a treat :T I've also used perfumed postcard samples that you get from freebie offers like the hugo boss ones etc.. peel back the sticker from the card and there's sometimes a tiny cloth disc with the fragrance on, so it can go in the hoover bag too :cool:0 -
if it has a hepa filter and smells doggy then the filter isn't working properly, some things you just cant clean, all the expelled air should pass through the hepa filter before exiting the machine, if the filter is blocked as it gets on my electrolux the smelly air can't pass through it so is forced out the sides, if it is an upright removing the baseplate and roller(only a few screws) can make a huge difference, clean out all the stuck hair n dust then refit the roller and base, filters are cheap on flea bay0

Our dyson really stank of fousty stale milk, i couldnt find out where it was coming from until i uncoiled the tube and took a whiff  (cue vomit icon) , if yours has a tube it may be food or bacteria breeding in the little spaces, luckily with a dyson i could see the green gunge when pulling it apart (dp finally admitted to hoovering up ds's spilt cereals from 2 months ago) If it is that or you want to clean the tube you need,
a broom handle,
a babies bottle brush,
gaffa tape,
plastic bag,
a hook,
a old hand towel,
washing up bowl,
hosepipe or watering can,
2 x bottle of vinigar and a tub of bicarb.
And a willing helper.
Firstly pull the tube out fully (best to go in the garden) and pour water through to remove any dust, clumps and floaty bits etc etc.
Recoil and soak in hot/warm water + stardrops for about 20-30 mins. (if yours is not too bad just skip to the vinigar part)
Remove tube from soaking, cover one end of tube with plastic bag and gaffa tape, pour in 2-4 tablespoons of bicarb (dp found it easier to tape the free end of the tube to the washing line and shake the bicarb down the tube untill most is covered, then pout the vinigar in quite quickly (best to stand sideways as it may fizz up) shake the tube so the solution can get to most area's.
Next.....
Firmly Attach bottle brush with gaffa tape to broom handle and push the brush down the tubing, twisting it helps to removed grime and spend around 3-4 mins giving it a good clean inside. Removing the bag at the bottle is the job for the willing volenteer, its pretty rank.
You can hook a old towel on to the broom handle if you want too, this will help it dry quicker but fiddle if it gets stuck half way through.
Finally pour through clean water to rinse.
It does sound like such a palava but worth doing once in a while to freshen it up, you could just soak in bleach every 3/4 months or so so keep the bacteria down, tbh its not something i have ever though about doing until recently.0 -
Hi halfpint,
There's an earlier thread with more tips that should help so I've added your thread to it to keep the suggestions together.

I have this same problem with my Henry hoover! I have a dog and so hoover everyday but it's only within the past 6 months that it's become smelly (and I've had the dog 2 years!). I've even washed the pipe out that it gets dragged around by and this has made no difference. I'm also interested to see if anyone can help with this.2013: Interflora Vouchers, Christmas Decorations, NNUK goody bag, thermos flask, macwet gloves0
