    :hello: Hello

Has anybody succesfully grown Sprouts and Purple Sprouting Broccoli in Containers? I wasnt going to bother with these as I didnt have enough room in my raised bed but I've just got some free seeds from T&M and it seems a shame to waste them....

I have a Deep Crate (like the ones bottles come in) that I was thinking may hold 2 Sprouts stems ? And maybe a Large round pot for one Purple Sprouting Broccoli Plant? Any Ideas of the Size and Depth that I will need?

Oh and while I'm here I also got a Packet of Corn Salad Seeds
Never heard of it before... Is it like Lambs Lettuce? Is it worth growing? Tasty?

    Thanks:o

I got the same selection of seeds too. I have planted up some cabbage in small pops, but may plant these on into the front garden. I planted some of the lambs lettuce into a contianer on the patio today.
  • hi everyone!:j

After reading some of this post last week i was excited and have done the following:

planted carrot seeds in my spare green recyling box
got 2 tomatoe plants from my friend
brought 2 strawberry plants from B&Q
    brought a butternut squash plant
    planted cucumber and pepper seeds!:)

I love the idea of having tomatoes upside down!is it too early to plant my toms outside? if so then how will i manage to get them upside down in a pot when they are big? or shall i put them upside down inside until planting out?

wll ive got some progress on my patio! cant remember if iv posted in this thread previously or not, so i'll start from the beginning...

newbie veg grower here, got a very small patio area, which is enclosed by 6' walls (grrrr!) but does manage to pick up some sun. I got one of those mini greenhouse 3 tier things, which im finding quite helpful but really too small.

On the kitchen windowsill, i planted 18 tomato seeds in the heated propagator 3 weeks ago. I have 18 seedlings now each about 2" high :) 4 will go out into a container on the patio once they get a bit bigger, and 14 will go to family/friends/carboot sale...

in the greenhouse, i have 10 chilli plants around 6" tall, in 9cm pots. they'll go into larger pots when bigger.

my lettuce that i put into a trough container about a week ago sprung up this morning, sio im pleased with that, but i put too much in there so when a little bigger, i'll thin them out and sow some more into another trough

I sowed my potatos this morning into a potato barrel, so fingers crossed they'll come out ok, not sure how much spud to expect from 5 potato's though..

and lastly, im waiting for my sweet peppers to pop up in the heated propagator on the sill. been nearly 2 weeks so i expect them up soon!

hopefully i'll have enough veg to sustain us for maybe a couple of months? we got a littl'un arriving at end of may so i expect my gardening time to be greatly reduced, so hopefully everything will be fairly self looking after!

This morning I sowed tumbling tom tomatoes and peppers, both on my windowsil for now. But they're going to be in hanging baskets/pots eventually

I also planted a container version of carrot on my patio called Amsterdam 2. I've used a pretty big pot and raised it up on a few bricks to try and keep carrot fly at bay.

Lettuce went in today too in a 'trough' and on saturday the kids planted 3 types of potato using a kit from Homebase for less than a fiver. They came with planting bags, and they're on the patio too

We've got peas hardening off. I'm going to do half in a trough and half in the ground and see how we go.

oh yes and strawberries in a hanging basket too.
I've got a tiny space too so have been busy with baskets and tubs

    Good luck :)

It's container gardening that I am doing too :)

I've grown things before but it's my first year for a very long time! All in containers tho!

Top of my list is tomatoes. Gardener's Delight is a very good variety for outdoors. Right now they can be hardened off outdoors, but bring them indoors or greenhouse etc overnight if there's any risk of frost. Tomatoes will need a stake to support them otherwise there are trailing ones such as Tumbling Tom which is a delicious cherry tomato and ideal for a hanging basket.

Next has to be strawberries! Great for containers and you have nice clean fruit too! You can buy strawberry planters or use what you like. You may need some netting to protect them from birds as blackbirds especially love them!

Lettuces especially smaller varieties such as little gem and cut-and-come again crops. I'm giving other salad leaves a try too such as rocket and mustard and other salad things like spring onions, garlic chives, nasturtiums - they'd look nice trailing from a hanging basket or tub :) radish and beetroot. They all grow well in pots. :)

I don't know how my chard, kale and radicchio will do but I'm giving them a go in containers too! I don't see why they shouldn't work.

Loads of herbs you can grow in pots as well ;)

If you're looking for other fruit then blueberries do well in containers in ericaceous compost. Also cranberries. If you're short of space there are some good dwarf fruit trees around including cherry! This is a good article about growing them
