Please bear with me--it is associated with container growing I promise!
Does anyone know the legalities of hanging things on a shared fence? We are in a terrace & the neighbours on both sides have replaced the 6' fences so technically we have no say on them. I would like to hang some of those carrier-bag type growers for strawbs & toms so nothing too 'weighty'. One set of neighbours are very easy to approach but the other side.....

I'm not sure on this... It's not a problem I have thought about, I'd just do it. But my situation is similar in that I live in a terrace house and we have no idea who is responsible for the boundary fences.. I contacted land registry and got details of our and our two neighbours properties (can do it online for a fee) none of them state who is responsible
Might be worth you looking into it that way... then if you are responsible for one side as laid out it doesn't matter if your neighbour has replaced.
If like me you have nothing clear cut then as a rule of thumb, if the posts of a fence or the piers of a brick wall are on your side, you own the structure. so have a look to see where exactly the fence posts are situated.Trying to make a better life.... It should say in the deeds to your property which fences you are responsible for. We were looking to replace one fence at one side of our rear garden, but checked with our solicitors who hold our deeds first. They came back and confirmed from looking at the plans (that come with the deeds) that that fence is the responsibility of the next-door neighbours. We are responsible for the fence on the other side, which we have replaced at our own expense since we've been living here.
Normally you are responsible ("own") for the fence at one side of your property and your neighbour is responsible for the other side and so on down the road. We're also responsible for the fence at the back of our property because our house was built before the ones at the back.
If fence belongs to your neighbour, I guess it's a question of how well you get on and just asking them nicely. We're quite happy for our neighbour to grow things up her side of our fence on a trellis.Big thanks to Martin Lewis for helping us start to sort out our finances!!!:A

And thank you to all posters! You're wonderful!0 -
Beatlefan Deeds that's the word I couldn't find last night! Our deeds specify ownership of the boundary... I don't have time now, but I'll have a look tonight and dig out the details I got for more information.Thank you for your help Harib0 but the fences are both constructed to butt up to the sides of the supports, so no definitive 'back' IYSWIM

yes we have similar fences, but I was thinking more along the lines of, if the fence posts were on your side.. very hard to tell, on ours they are slap bang in the middle between the two properties!Trying to make a better life.... If you need me you'll find me at the allotment.0 -
Newbie veg container grower here! Sorry if this is a completely simple question :
My spring onion seeds are coming along nicely. How big should they be for me to re-pot them? Also, do they need hardening off (they are currently on a windowsill) or can I put them straight out into the containers in the garden?DFW Nerd 941 Proud to be dealing with my debt

Newbie here.
I bought some kits in Wilkinsons - they are a plastic type shopping bag with compost and seeds and each bag has the pic of the vegetable on. I got beans, beetroot and carrots. My neighbour was surprised at the carrot pack as she thought as a rule of thumb they need two spades depth to grow. Do you think they will be OK or did I fall for a gimick?
Thanks
Hiya,
Ive just bought the same kits from Wilkos. Chanttnay Carrots, Micro Planting Pouch & Peppers in a pot..they were all 1/2 price, seem a good idea & im short of space. Im going to give it a go & see. Might pop back in a bit for the potato one..
Let me know how you get on with yours Claire21.

We had a couple of those big builders bags you get sand delivered in, so I have put about 12 inches of soil & compost in and have put dwarf beans, and peas in them. (They are about 3ft square, and 30 inches high) Also as the weather is still a bit cold, I have put bubble wrap over the top and anchored it with clothes pegs. I have put about 6 inches of soil in another, and planted spuds in it. I intend to keep topping them up when leaves come through. To hold up the sides of the bags, I have cut a tube up from the middle of new carpet.
Also, I am experimenting with tubes from the middle of carpets, they are very sturdy. Cut them down to about 18" high, and filled them with sandy soil, and planted carrots in them.
The tube idea didn't work0 -
Well my pots are starting to look very healthy but am struggling with slugs. I have copper tape round but they are still going in. Ive now started with coffee grounds. Any other tips?Although I get lonely  as a single mother there are always two smiling angels ready to give me the biggest hug in the world. Love you babies :grouphug:
