Hello All
For the first time i have decided to grow Broccoli and Sprouts. I bought the seeds and planted about 3 weeks ago. Because of the sunny weather they grew within a week. I have placed them in my south facing poarch so they get loads of sun. I water about every other day. About 20 of each of the seeds grew to approx an 1-2 inches but over the last week they have started to die. They are in a seed tray and was thinking of moving them into bigger pots so they could continue their growth before being placed outside. But they started to die before i got round to it. What am i doing wrong and what is causing them to die?
Also I planted strawberry plants about 6 weeks ago and they haven't grown at all. Any ideas?
Thanks
Planted purple sprouting broccoli a year ago. OH dug out half the plants a month ago as they had done nothing and we had forgotten what they were but the 4 remaining plants have eventually produced purple sprouting broccoli. I have probably removed 1000 caterpillars from these :- even in february when we had a week of frost they were still there !! Now I have a problem giving it away there is so much at the same time. I know that if I let it flower I won`t get any more but next year I will grow cavalo nero which lasts 18 months amd will grow 2 sprouting broccoli plants which wil be netted.0 -
:hello: Hello
Has anybody succesfully grown Sprouts and Purple Sprouting Broccoli in Containers? I wasnt going to bother with these as I didnt have enough room in my raised bed but I've just got some free seeds from T&M and it seems a shame to waste them....
I have a Deep Crate (like the ones bottles come in) that I was thinking may hold 2 Sprouts stems ? And maybe a Large round pot for one Purple Sprouting Broccoli Plant? Any Ideas of the Size and Depth that I will need?
Oh and while I'm here I also got a Packet of Corn Salad Seeds
Never heard of it before... Is it like Lambs Lettuce? Is it worth growing? Tasty?

Oh wow, I know an answer! Corn salad is exactly the same as lambs lettuce. It's a fabulous salad veg, because you can crop it in cooler weather. You can harvest it leaf by leaf. Also, if my bought bags of it are anything to go by, it keeps well even when cut. But I don't know how easy it is to grow, my seeds are waiting to be sown!Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000

I have a large pot with 4 herbs in, Mint; Coriander, Coriander (hot and spicy) and Parsley.
I've put copper tape around the pot so i know slugs arent getting in there but something is eating my mint. Whatever it is hasn't touched the other 3 plants, just the mint.
Any ideas?0 -
Thanks KuneKune.... Might try the Corn Salad later in the year then if it likes the cold weather.
BeenieCat - Cant help with whats eating the Mint but my only advice is to seperate the mint anyway as its VERY Invasive - It grows almost like a weed and is best in a pot on its own so that it doesnt take over the other herbs.2009 Savings & Winnings so far....Pigsback £15.06 +[strike]£40[/strike] M&S Vouchers + £20 New Look + TNS £15 Capital Bonds + Qype Ninja Goodies + £50 Virgin VoucherSealed Pot Challenge #589 - Target £1500 -
Re: Potatoes...
My grow bags aren't very deep & have only put a layer of about 2-3" soil at the bottom. Settled the seed potatoes in a small trench & made small mounds of soil over the potato of at least an inch.
Is that enough? Or should I dig them up & make the 'bottom layer' deeper?Debt @ LBM 29/12/08 - £49044! It could be slugs in there. They might be living in the soil already so dont need to cross the copper wire.0 -
I used a bag of compost to fill the pot, freshly opened from the garden centre so i'm confident there's no slugs in there
I am no expert and I dont know what likes to eat mint.(exeptin me of course:p)
But I have been finding little lime green catapilars on my broad beans this week.
And they are making holes in the leaves, so we are now at war.(luckily I have a small son who loves to squish)
Where are they coming from, I thought catapilars were a midsummer butterfly egg thing“Careful. We don't want to learn from this.”0
