Has anyone tried growing mini veg?
My garden is really small so don't have space for a veg patch but want to try and grow some veg this year in containers.
Theres a seller on ebay i've found that sells mini veg, carrots, lettuce etc to grow in containers instead of a big veg patch.
Has anyone tried this with success or would i be better off getting normal sized veg but only grow a little of each variety.

    Have you staked them ???
Tomatoes struggle to stand on their own, when they get beyond a certain size...
A small skewer will work when its little... moving on to a bamboo cane when larger.

I have grown normal veg in pots for years, but I also buy from Suttons or Dobies their seeds/mini plugs especially bred for containers. E.g: Full size peppers but on a smaller plant. Had great success with them. Obviously as the earlier poster said, if you want mini veg, just pull them up earlier!

As for carrots, radishes, tomatoes, chillis, lettuce etc - they can all be grown in pots without any problems. I have garlic growing in pots at the moment and potatoes in potato sacks - bought them as a kit. Plus all your herbs much prefer pots anyway.

Some companies sell patio kits which are 5 or six veggies just made for growing in pots like tomatoes and courgettes and salad onions etc.

I say, don't pay extra for mini veg!

I have been buying the container boxes, like storage boxes from tesco they were reduced to £1.30 and are working a treat with the rectangle shape and are quite deep. I have one box as a salad box, radishes, cucumbers and courgettes in mine. They are also fab on space as they dont waste any.

Just make sure you drill holes in the bottom for drainage.

Hope this helps someone was fed up paying garden centre prices!!!

Well, it isn't the same, but if it helps, the first year I grew peppers I bought plug plants - 5 for about £6 I think and we had a rotten summer and I think I ended up with a total of 5 edible peppers all year so they turned out to be the most expensive peppers I had ever eaten!! However, the fun I had watching them grow more than made up for that so I KNOW you will enjoy your mini veg and get a lot out of the whole process!

You will have to let us know what you bought and how they are doing - maybe start your own 'I'm growing mini-veg' thread!!

    hugs

Hi all I just wanted to say hello! I have been a lurker for ages and have finally plucked up the courage to register and post and also set up my little container garden! I have enjoyed it all so much and am worried about all my veg and plants so much. I am a complete beginner but have been trying to learn from all you people on here so thank you!

I have posted on another thread but wondered if I could post here as well, can carrot fly affect seeds I have just planted? Would they lay eggs in the soil? Sorry as you can tell I really am at the basic stages lol! But I am an eager learner:)
