That's right Ping does still not work, it says could not find host and to check the name and try again0

what happens on a tracert? is it still trying to go through the 10.0.0.138 ?0

sorry guys got to go, really appreciate help, I will be back tomorrow0

That suggest to me that DNS isn't the only problem, and that TCP/ip routing is messed up.
Could you compare the ipconfig /all output, and all tcp/ip settings with the working PC?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
wonder what would happen if it was tried with the other machine switched off..
I'm pretty sure it's routing back round that one and trying to go out the same way it used to rather than going straight out via the router.0 -
scheming_gypsy wrote:not sure if you've read through the entire thread but HH is having problems after running his laptop through a local network and ICS. The DNS server addresses aren't being pulled from the router but seemingly from the other machine / Acatel modem (i think).
I'm running a Belkin router myself and the DNS servers are the same as the default gateway.
As it seems to be picking up info from the old network and transfering to 10.0.0.138 to try and access the net.
your correct the dns server is the same as the default gateway,
but this is just merely using the same ip addresses for the dns as whats given, manually entering it does the same thing incase the router is not forwarding the dns addresses properly,
both ways should work,
anyway im stumped on this ,
hope you can get it sorted.Waddle you do eh?0 -
an ipconfig was coming back with a totally different DNS address than the routers IP and resetting it to DHCP wasn't giving the right one..
tis an annoying one though0 -
It's probably staring us in the face, maybe a nights sleep might help..
My current guess would be that there are some remnants of the ICS config in his laptop setup, and getting rid of them might sort it. Never uninstalled an ICS client, so not sure what to look for..
The other question is, how is the other (working) PC wired up? Is the cable service plugged into the router, or into one of the network cards on the second PC (as it would be for ICS)? If that was the case, the second PC would work, but the laptop wouldn't because the router doesn't have an internet connection, and is just being used as a switch.
I knew this would turn into a 5 pager!Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
ok I am pretty lost with this now but you lot seem quite close I feel. I am sure one silly little setting will do it but on what equipment and what to do.
We did think it possible that the router was faulty but obviously the PC gets its internet through it ok why wouldn't the laptop and the wireless bit was just missleading as the same problems exist when wired.
Could there be a setting that was set for some other arrangement in the past on the router which does not allow the system to work normally the way we have it connected now. I can reset and that will keep the settings, but if you hold the reset in for 12 seconds all settings on the router are set back to factory settings. We are a little worried trying this in case we cannot get the internet back ie my father is not sure whether he had to set anything up on the router to get the internet in the past, and obviously we could not get help so easily if it did all go wrong without internet. So it would be preferable for someone to spot a setting.0 -
what happens if you turn off the other computer and try a tracert ?
I think once we can eliminate that 10.0.0.138 routing issue we're laughing. It's obviously going to the router and then sodding off somewhere else, so maybe back to the main PC. Is ICS still configured on the main PC? if it is, turn it off 'cos you don't need to use it.0
