Hi I am at my fathers home and he has a pc connected to the internet via a wireless Belkin router, although the PC is actually connected to the the router by cable. The interent works great on the PC but recently he has got himself a USB wireless linksys thingy to plug in his laptop. He wanted me to get the laptop connected to the internet. I plugged the Linksys device in and it detected it straight away as expected and then it found the Belkin wireless router no problem, but I cannot get internet working on the laptop.
I have set the bit on the pc to allow other computers to connect to the internet through this computer but it has not helped.
Any ideas please. All help appreciated.

Try running Control Panel - Network Setup Wizard. On the Connection Method screen you want the 'residential gateway' option.0 -

Sounds like you need to tweak your firewall settings. You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take - Wayne Gretzky
Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.0 -

I doubt if it anything to do with your firewall.
Just because you can see the wireless router, doesn't mean that you have established a connection to it.
You need to log in to the router using the PC that is connected to it via the cable and enter your WPA encryption password. When you have done this you need to do a similar thing on the laptop to allow it to connect to the router. If you don't set up wireless security, anyone nearby could easily gain access to your broadband connection for free!
Change your router login password from the default as well.

go to control panel on the main computer and run wireless network setup, this will guide you through the process.you can do it manually or using a usb stick the later being the easy option.
Thisw will add the network password to your wireless device.laptop or any other pc with wirelss capability.Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS0 -
has the laptop connected to the internet previously using a wired modem? if so go into tools > options > connections and set it to never dial a connection as it may be trying to use a previous connection instead of the router0

are you actually connected to the router,
or does it see it and not connect.Waddle you do eh?0 -
I suspect firewall as well, if it's Zonealarm on the Laptop then that does not support NetworkingEx forum ambassador

Hi guys thanks for all the help.
In answer to some of the questions, yes the laptop did connect to the internet with a cable, but for some reason he had it connected through a 2nd network card in the PC.
Also at the moment there is no security setup so yes anybody could get in but we are not worried about that until we can get the wireless connection working.
When we try to connect it does find the belkin router and does say connected with a very strong signal (they are right next to each other at the moment).
Also we have tried running through "set up a wireless network wizard" several times but it appears to go through ok but still the internet still does not work.
I have turned off windows firewall on both machines but I assume the router has a built in firewall. But remember the PC is getting internet through this router via cable and therefore through the firewall without problem so why not the laptop wirelessly?
More help please.0 -

I'm not doubting your sanitybut check, check and check again that Windows Firewall is definitely off! Microsoft seem to have gone out of their way to make sure that this "feature" of XP causes as much grief and is as obstinate as possible!!
Just because you've clicked "turn firewall off" doesn't mean that XP will actually take any notice of your request!
On your desktop pc, in "My Network Places/View Network Connections" does your Local Area Connection show as Connected/Firewalled?You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take - Wayne Gretzky

ipconfig/all can reveal a lot about your network configuration. Click Start - Run - type in cmd and click OK. In the new window that's just opened type:
ipconfig/all
and press return.
Copy and paste the results here.0
