cheers chuckles1066, I have double checked. I know what you mean, I did come across the firewall being on a couple of times before after turning it off as if it had a life of its own but I keep an eye on it now whilst trying to resolve this problem and it never has come on again on either machine.

cheers Chippy_Minton, I tried what you said but it brings up a problem message

"Windows cannot find 'ipconfig/all'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again" Any idea why?

Also I noticed on the laptop, when I try clicking onview workgroup computers, it brings up a message "Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use the network resource. Contact the administrator..."

    try

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

can you ping the router wirelessly?

ping 192.168.2.1 (I think that's the belkin ip).

if so, then you can talk to the router, and are connected, so it is probably an IE proxy setting (possibly related to you ICS config)..

ie, tools, internet options, connections, lan settings.

I'd turn the firewall back on, before you catch something nasty.

As Chippy says, an ipconfig /all > c:\1.txt , post c:\1.txt would help diagnosis.

    start, run, cmd

    ipconfig /all > c:\1.txt

    notepad c:\1.txt

    copy and paste

do this when using wireless, not wired. (cos we are trying to diagnose the wireless issue)

also, do you have any proxy server setup in IE?

I am doing what you say, I get the black window open and type the ipconfig command, ipconfig /all > c:1.txt which seems to do something but I am assuming at this point that i should get a list of stuff up but there is nothing. I ignored this at first and went on to the notepad bit but although notpad starts nothing is there as I presume the first bit has gone wrong, ie not bringing anything up.

Also sorry for being dumb here, but I assume we are doing this on the PC and not the laptop. I have tried it on the laptop and it brings up a message "The system cannot find the path specified.

I wanted you to do this on the laptop, wirelessly.

you need to type it in exactly as I posted, you are missing \'s out

    ipconfig /all > c:\1.txt

    notepad c:\1.txt

to do it to screen, just do ipconfig /all (without the redirection to a file >c:\1.txt)

    Click
Start > settings > network connections. Then right click your Wireless Network Connection and go to properties. Then click TCP/IP and click properties, make sure it's set to obtain an IP address automatically.
The info doesn't look right. The IP should be 192.168.2.* 222 is at the back end of the range so you'd need another 221 devices connected before getting that IP address. Also the default gateway should be showing as 192.168.2.1
