how do you do that then, never heard of it?0

there we go then..

plug the modem into the router rather than the PC and configure the router with the ISP details.0 -
Type in the netsh..... above into the command prompt (same place as you've been typing ipconfig etc).

but the modem is plugged into the router, then the PC is plugged into the router to complete the connection process, and the router has been set up, ok it seems, since the PC gets its internet through it without problem0

sorry mate, misunderstood when you said the 'modem plugs into the phoneline'. I took it as the modem was still plugged into the PC.
At least we know why it's routing through the 10.0.0.138 IP and getting the DNS settings from. Probably best putting the DNS settings back to 'Detect Automatically' if you changed them to 192.168.2.1 as i think we were all under the impression it was an ADSL router.
Although it's strange that it's picking up the modem as a link out to the internet but then stopping there.0 -
I tried typing netsh interface ip delete arpcache but it comes up with "the following command was not found. this is the case with either machine.0

If I understand correctly
PC1 - router - modem works
LAP - router - modem doesn't
LAP - PC1NIC2 - router - modem does.
So I suggest comparing the setup of the PC and laptop.
Compare the ipconfig /all from both machines (looking for any 10.*, or any major differences) Posting the output of both might help us.
compare the tcpip config for lan cards on both.
Or go into the router config screen and see if 10.* is mentioned anywhere
Also, you could try searching the registry on the laptop for 10. using regedit or http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/regscanner.zipEver get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
10 hours later..
If it's not an ADSL router then i presume you can't put the ISP details into the router for it to authenticate. Which would then say that the main PC is running through the original ISP login details on that local machine.
When you're trying to get out to the net from the laptop it's getting as far as the modem (10.0.0.138) and when it's trying to get out onto the net it's not no authentication setup (username or password) so it can't connect to your ISP and then out onto the net.
Create yourself a 'dial up' account on the laptop using the same credentials as on the main PC. Then check the 'connections' tab on the main computer and see if it's set to dial a connection..
Also make sure the DNS is back to automatic and picking up the 195 one on an IPconfig0 -
Have now created a new connection on laptop, so if we only had a laptop we could now connect but it does not connect.
Went through all settings on both machines on the connections, I even double checked. There was a couple of checked boxes different so I copied main PC settings, saved and rebooted. I turned main PC off so it would be as if it did not exist and then tried to connect with the laptop, but still no luck. What setting on the laptop could cause this problem, any ideas?
Incidently I can now see the folders on the main PC under My Network Places but I am denied access. Checked firewalls and all are off, so why am I denied access?0 -
if you plug the modem straight into the laptop rather than the router what happens then?0
