UPDATE:
31st May 2006
Dear XXX
Thank you for your email of 26th May 2006.
I am sorry to hear that you are concerned with an amendment we are making to our current charging policy. I can understand your frustration at this time.
Richard Chew, of my Senior Customer Relations Team, spoke with you on 30th May 2006. He explained that the numbers you wish to dial are not UK mobile phone numbers and therefore we cannot include them within your inclusive allowance. Richard advised you that the charge for each call will be 25 pence per minute and that this is effective from 1st July 2006.
We have a culture of using customers’ feedback to drive improvements and I would like to thank you for your comments regarding this amendment. Richard has forwarded these to the relevant area.
If you have any further queries, please contact Richard on 0845 xxxxxxx where he will be happy to help.
Yours sincerely

Hey Guys,
If i wanted to cancel my o2 contract using the 0744 issue as an excuse, how do i go about it?
any help appreciated.
Thanks0 -
Make a call to O2 Customer Services and choose the option to cancel your contract - this will put you through to Retentions, who will negotiate with you. From my personal experience dealing with them, you need to convince them that this change will increase your costs significantly (ie if you use 07744 a lot) otherwise they'll try to be difficult. They might offer you a line rental discount if you do not cancel, in an attempt to keep you but if you're adamant on cancelling, there will be no additional costs0

Thanks for your input. however the problem is i have never used 07744 before so should i use it for the next few days before i call in to "cancel"?0

A recent text message from O2 stated that "from June 07744974370 May not be free for SOME O2 users to call the USA. But you CAN now all use 08700415370 and call USA 24/7. Check with O2"
I have been using the 0774 number for months now to call a mobile in Alaska with no problems, but was aware of the changes. I checked the O2 tariff page as I was worried about being charged national rates for calls now, but the page does state that 0870 calls will be taken from free minutes.
Which is fine untill they run out. But I have also been able to find a very cheap online phonecard from https://www.planetphonecards.com the card I chose is a story mobile card. They give you £5 free with each card you buy (at the moment). £20 gives you 2000 minutes +500 free. The call quality is brilliant. It is a life saver for when your mobile free minutes run out and probably a lot cheaper than increasing your mobile tariff to include more free minutes, as a £20 card lasts for 60 days.
I hope I've been helpful to some of you.0 -
Well, in the practical sense, the change in terms is not significantly detrimental to you, and they might argue this when you call in, but it's still an increase in charges, and by the current wording of their T&C you're technically allowed to cancel. What I mentioned in the post above was from a single personal experience and you could have it easier with whomever deals with your call
Whether you use the 07744 number for a few days before you cancel is up to you. I honestly can't say if it would give you better leverage.0 -
