Hi all,

I live in a house which is directly on a busy main road (no front garden, door right on pavement). Some years ago the council wrote to say there were erecting a new bus stop on the opposite side of the road, but it was not directly in front of my house, it was opposite the house next door, so I didn't object.

The bus stop has been in place for a few months now, but I was horrified to find that a bus shelter was erected right opposite my lounge window on thursday morning! It is about 10 feet away from the bus stop and right opposite my house, so I now have a bench full of people sitting and staring directly at me all day long. Unless I close my curtains & sit in the dark there's nothing I can do!

I was not consulted about a bus shelter and I feel it's totally unacceptable, I have no privacy now. Why couldn't they have faced the bus shelter away from the road (so that the people would have their backs to my house)? The next bus stop along the road is sited that way round.

I have been calling the council's 'traffic and transport' department since thursday, but can only ever get various answerphones and no-one has bothered to call me back, despite me saying it's urgent.

I'm absolutely hopping mad about this, and desperate to know what I should do next. Has anyone any ideas? Does anyone know what my rights are?

I really need & would so appreciate your help if there's anyone out there with experince of these things.

  • Is it on the other side of the road to you?
The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.

    Hi Border Collie,

Yes it is on the other side of the road, so it's about 5 metres away (just the road's width) as my home is directly on the pavement, with the people sitting facing directly into my window while they wait for a bus.

If you cannot get in touch by phone, try another method.
Write a letter, recorded delivery, stating your objection and the lack of consultation.

But you were happy about the bus stop being opposite your neighbour and a bunch of people standing and looking in their window?

Keep going on at the council, it may be the contractors have erected it the wrong way round and in the wrong place.

    Get some net curtains.
"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"
  • So now you have people sat down, looking at your house, rather than people stood up, looking at your house.

if they turn the shelter around, wwont the people be sat looking into the house across the road, only now just a few feet away from their window?

If the council decide not to move the stop, could you invest in some one way window film for your window so all they will see is their reflection. Its not too expensive. Here is a site http://www.shop4windowfilms.co.uk/oneway.php
