Forgot to ask: If you had never seen the other place, how would you have felt about the place you are now buying?

If the two were up for sale on the open market we'd go for the one we're now buying without a doubt. It's much bigger downstairs, nicer garden (South facing, not overlooked) and the best road in the town.

Actually I am hoping that this does not hurt them enough to backtrack and try to sell to you after all. And I have a concern as to how they will fund the 30K to you. Is it from the sale of their house?

We suspect the funding may be 'bank of Mum and Dad' as they got involved in recent weeks to try and get things sorted out amicably.

Have followed this story with great interest - great news that you have finally managed to sort this out to your satisfaction. Congrats.

One other possible lesson for others from what I've read here (would be interesting to know if this is accurate WW): it sounds from your posts that you've had very good advice from your solicitor throughout. Good strategy on getting valuations of comparable properties and he/she didn't try to push you into going the court route. I'm not sure you'd get such a good service from some of the cheaper conveyancing options (online conveyancers etc). You often get what you pay for.
  • Well done WW - I've also been following this thread with great interest.
Fantastic ending for you and I wish you all the very best in your new home -and will be following the refurb thread with the same interest.

Yeah well done. If it was meant to be then you would have had that other house. Most of the times when things like this happens, it happens for a reason and something much better turns up.

Moving house is stressful for anyone even when things go to plan. I`m sure all of us know that it wasn`t at all easy but it`s great that you can get support from online "friends".

On a serious note, it`s now Septemeber and I`m sure we`ve been advised to cut down our drinking lol! You have one less excuse to drink!

Actually this is probably a key point, yes. Our solicitors were an established local firm, with our particular bloke having approx 40 years under his belt - they were not a cheapy online outfit. On the other hand, the vendors' first outfit clearly were of the cheap online variety and it certainly showed - their communications were poorly written and their 'strategy' was to threaten us from the outset...even though they didn't have a leg to stand on.

I do think it's only when the proverbial hits the fan on a house sale that the quality of your solicitors really comes to light.

    Very interesting.
What were their second lot like?

How did they get involved? Did they try and contact you directly? I would have thought it went pretty formal - just sounds a bit odd mum and dad trying to sort it out for them, like a squabble at school?
