My partner and I have just moved into a small 2 bed house, renting. We have just recieved our first fixed (unmetered) water bill...£7.02! It clearly states that the yearly fixed amount is £35.70. This is surely far too low? I'm not complaining about something being too cheap, but I'd rather pay the right amount than end up having to pay a huge lump sum at some point..

Its Essex and Suffolk Water if that helps!

    Thanks!
    GC2012: Nov £130.52/£125
    GC2011:Sept:£215
    Oct:£123.98Nov:£120Dec:£138Feb:£94.72

    Quit smoking 10am 17/02/11 - £4315 saved as of Nov'12

Engaged to my best friend 08/2012:heart2:

Put the difference in an account so if they do come and ask for the money later on, you have it. If not, you're quids in.

Is it water only and you will have a waste water bill from a different company ?
    What is your RV ?

Aaaah that is quite likely, silly me! Thankyou! Yes, I read the bill and it says "water" no mention of sewerage. I expect we will be getting a different bill from another company in a few days. :DThanks for that! I'm afraid I don't know what an RV is so can't answer that :o

The RV should be listed on the bill..it should say something like

RV rate : at £xxx per pound

It might be worth checking it out to make sure it is the same on the waste water

  • I understand from OFFWAT that water co's are not legally entitled to ask for payments over 10 months, so we do ours over 12 - it mucks up their accounts sytem - Shame eh! Not a big difference but every bit helps. As far as gas and electric go - because they have to show the formulae for calculation, its easy to set that up in a spreadsheet, we read our meters every month and pay them what we have used and ignore their bills. Have advised them accordingly.

Not sure where you get that from as it is not true. OFWAT allow the 10 month billing and support it as it means that the account is clear for the next RV year.
It runs the same as the council tax and remember that we use to pay for our water rates that way so that system carries on.

You might find yourself with a CCJ if you get into arrears badly but then again your way might work well for the near future.

Who are you replying too ?

Also they don't have to give the reply in writing , they do have to reply in some form within 5 working days for normal letters and 10 for complaints but that reply can be as simple as a call to say they are still looking into it.
