1. I live in a rented, self-contained, purpose built flat with a shared main. This means a water meter would have to be fitted inside the property. The United Utilities engineer who came to do a survey found that because of a problem with the pipework this wouldn't be possible. If I'd owned the flat I could have had it changed but as a tenant my landlord wouldn't approve or pay for the work. The engineer took a photograph as proof for United Utilities.
After speaking to their very helpful advisor I was told that as I am the sole occupant of a 2 bedroomed flat I qualified for a discount, halving the amount I pay. I also get a £5 credit for paying by Direct Debit.
The increase in charges for 2012/13 will be £16.64.

sorry but this doesn't make sense!
Do you mean you CAN'T have it removed?
You can revert back to charging by rateable value within 12 months but the meter stays put. The new occupant MAY then be charged using the existing meter.0 -
Just got a water bill for my house.
£3500!!
Ok here's the story. I bought a house 2 years ago, it was run down and had been unoccupied for about 5 years. Since then I have renovated it and only now it is up to a liveable standard. During the time that I have had the house (2 years) it has been unoccupiod as I have been living with parents while all this work was being done. I am now selling the house.
Got a letter through today with the bill of about £3500! It says pay this by 1st April 2012.
I know I should have contacted them when I bought the house 2 years ago, but I didn't as it wasn't being occupied.
It states that 'If this property is now occupied/ tennanted or has been bought recently, please contact us straight away to provide details.' and 'If this property is still empty you do not need to contact us until the owner or occupier changes.'
What should I do about this bill, as I know at least £3k of it must have been billed to the house from before I bought it.
Should i just ignore it and sell the house and let the next guy just register his details with them and they will wipe the bill? Or should I just tell them I bought it 2 years ago and its been unoccupied in this time and still is?0 -
Presumably the house has no meter.
In which case you are liable for the water charges based on the Rateable Value(RV) from the date of purchase to the present.
It might have been unoccupied, but water was being used.0 -

Are you paying £31 for 12 months in the year?(some companies have 10 payments)
Estimated readings if metered?

More sensible advice might be to pay from when work started on the house up until now, which may have taken place only over the last six months - or three - or less.
But if no water at all was used then I don't believe you are required to pay anything.
Don't forget to notify them when you vacate the premises - you might be liable for any future charges if you don't.0 -
