  • I'm new in UK so excuse if question is stupid.

I've got my second bill from ThamesWater, untemetered house.
I've paid much more(about £45) last year, commparing to £25 this year.

It's due to this line in my previous bill
    Total new charges £346.43
    Account summary
    Total new charges £346.43
    Total amount due £346.43
Balance carried forward to next plan £158.58
Total amount due by instalments £505.01

Can somebody explain what does it mean? I just moved as tenant last year

    Welcome to the forum.

It means that for the last financial year - from 01 April 2021 to 31 March 2022  -there was £158.58 unpaid. That amount has been added to this financial year's bill - 01 April 2022 to 31 March 2023 - making a total of £505.01 to be paid this year.

So am I right that I need to write down a letter to agency with this situation?

What can they propose as a solution for this?

Or it's an issue with Thames water so thy will need to handle it with landlord?

It depends when you moved into the house.

With unmetered bills you are charged 6 months in advance.

So it appears the outstanding £158.58 was for the period 01 October 2021 to 31 March 2022. and should have been paid in October 2021

So if you moved in during the period 01 October 2021 to 31 March 2022  you are only liable for the period from the date you moved in to 31 March 2022. The landlord is responsible for the period before you moved in.

    Hi,

Just have a query about water price increases. I'm with Yorkshire Water, and I never get anything from them giving me any notice about the increase and what the new prices are.

I know the prices change at the beginning of every financial year, but I thought they would have to notify customers like any other utility company.

Alos, interested to hear what other peoples experiences are with other water companies.

    Thanks.

This has been discussed before on MSE.

My understanding it is because unlike 'any other utility company' you have no option to move to another water company to get cheaper rates.

It is pointless in the water companies having to send out 20+ million letters - which will be a cost borne by customers - to inform them of something that they will find out about when they get their bills at the beginning of the financial year. Also the information is available in advance from Ofwat and the individual company's website.

Similarly I don't get advance notice of an increase in my Council Tax bill - like my water bill I find out when I get my bill at the beginning if the financial year.
  • Hi,

Newbie here! I'm wanting to figure out why my water bill is so high for a small 1 bed flat, 2 occupants. I'm with Thames Water, and this years bill is £758, I've just been trying to find out if my rateable value is correct with them, but can only find on the VOA rateable value for business premises.

    So, my questions are -

    1. Does this amount seem high to anyone else?
    2. How do I find my rateable value?

Thanks so much for your help!
