I think it's because final year students have a smaller loan and are unable to do much (if any) part-time work

You're clearly not as cynical as me! :rotfl:

Final year students are a priority at my uni, over earlier years at least.

I suspected as much. Thanks for the info.
  • Just wanted to say I applied for an access to learning fund after reading this. :)
I gave my form in on thursday morning and heard back thursday afternoon that I've been awarded £1500, and I have to pick a cheque up next week. I did speak to a finance advisor at the uni (Winchester uni) and she did say that because I'm in my third year and get help from DSA, I was more likely to receive help. I will say the form did take me a little longer than 30 mins to fill in but definately worth it.

So thanks for everyones advice one here :D
  • Oh forgot to add above... I did also have a genuine reason to ask for help. (I live with my Fiance and he's just been made redundant and receiving no pay out as has not been there long enough!) So I did have a genuine reason which I had to put on the form. Just wanted to clarify, I didnt get it just because I receive DSA or am in my final year! :D

whattt? third years get a smaller loan?
that'd be me, but i don't know how much i'm getting yet..
    why will it be smaller?!!

(edit..) because it won't include the summer after? yeah that'll probably be it..

    Yep, that's the reason.

I am on the old systen so this may not apply, but it was around £1k less for me in the third year.
  • i got £50 for each week of the course from my uni last year. Helped loads, and actually kept me there, when i thought i was going to have to quit.

did anyone find out if you can apply for this while doing OU course? I wil be starting 120 point course in February which is equivalent to 12 hours a week (which is classed as full time) while also working full time (but do have debts and things)

    PM'd you :)

    gist of it:
I posted the details of the OU ALF in this thread:

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/...html?t=1018301

It's on post #22. There's a link to the form there.

Also, I'm doing 120 points this year and it works out to be 32hrs/wk but it still isn't classed as full time by anyone useful (student loans - although there is a £255 grant, DWP etc)

Good luck with your courses and funding :)
Wanted to add that I'm almost certain they don't cover cost-of-living expenses from the ALF, just course related expenses - pc, postage, ink, childcare, internet access etc etc :)

    Studying with the OU - MU120 (CMA 41 & 42, TMA01(i) & (ii) done :D) and also M150 (02/09), DB123 (05/09), MST121 (09/09) and T175 (10/09)

Hi, can anyone advise me about the alf? Im a new student on a nursing degree course. I get a bursary(yet to be paid) and half student loan...Its estimated that my bursary will be about £826 per month. I'm single with 4 children and am struggling at the minute. I will hopefully recieve a childcare allowance as well as the main bursary which will cover up to £180 per week....unfortunately my childcare is just short of £300 per week and im terrified that I wont be able to find the shortfall. Because previous bad credit(not loads just bad judgement) I dont have an overdraft and am sooooooo worried. Does anyone know if the alf might be able to help me and if so in what form??
    Thanks guys xxx

i just been informed today i was awarded £1500 which is double what they gave me this time last year but then my debts are worse this year so my advice to anyone thinking of applying is just go for it. make sure you take all your documents with you that has all your outgoings and any source of income coming in. also on your bank statements you would need to explain anything over £100 so best to go through it and make notes before meeting the financial adviser!
