How universities and colleges pay out through the fund
Universities and colleges have a large say in how money from the fund is paid out locally. They will look at your individual circumstances, usually assessing whether there is a shortfall between your income and your outgoings. But the following groups are priorities for support:- students with children - especially lone parents
- mature students- especially those with existing financial commitments
- students from low-income families
- care leavers
- students who are homeless or who are living in 'Foyers' (these provide accommodation, guidance and support for homeless young people)
- final-year students
- disabled students

Wondering if anyone can help me - I started a 4 year Business Degree in Sept 2008. At the time my Salary was £22,000 per year, which was more than enough to cover my tuition fees (£1500 spread over six months at £250 per month)
I have just been told that due to current climate, my role has been made redundant and am now being offered a £16,000 per year role.
I've made the first two payments, but as of next month, with rent and bills etc. I will only have £311 spare. If i pay my £250 course fees I will only have £61 for food for a full month for the next 4 months.
I know that it says on my university website that the ALF is not for tuition fees, but if I put in that I am intending to pay my tuition fees with my income and use the ALF for living expenses, will this be acceptable?
Any help much appreciated0 -
Just filling in all the forms now, im in dire straights because I lost my job last November and have been searching for one since then with no luck, i've still got bills from my last flat I moved out of in July and a rather massive winter bill for my current house, and quite a lot of rent to pay!!trying to become a moneysaving student0

Just wanted to say, I got £800 from the Hardship Fund (as it was known then) in my final year of uni... I applied at the end of the academic year (May I think) and received my cheque in June. It helped SO much - I bought a car which I'm still using now, 2 years later!0

I work around 20-25 hours a week to pay my mortgage whilst studying so I guess I don't have a chance of any free money.
I am not generalising everyone here but this scheme seems to be yet another government incentive to reward those who can't be bothered working. I'm sure there are plenty of people who need this money and can't find employment so please don't feel offended by my post if you fit into this category. It just seems to me that the whole thing encourages people to be financially irresponsible.0 -

I was working 16 hours a week when I received the grant. My partner also received a grant (albeit only £150, but it helped) when he was working 20 hours a week. I'd say definitely give it a try - what have you got to lose? The fact that you have a mortgage (priority payment) will go in your favour.
One thing to remember, when I applied for this scheme (2 years ago) you had to be in receipt of a student loan to qualify. Not sure if this still stands, but something to keep in mind.0 -

I understand what you are saying, I sat down and worked out exactly before I decided to go to uni to make sure I could afford the mortgage and bills....but didn't count on boyfriend losing job, and other costs that we have incurred in only 6 months! Everything seems to have come at once.
I did see one girl in my class apply though...her parents pay her accomodation, she collects her loan and grant....yet still feels entitled to more money  It would annoy me if she gets anything - especially with all the new clothes shes had recently.
P.S - I have three jobs, two are occasional and one is regular I work when I canMarried 5th June 20101st Baby born 12th April 2011:j0
