I was wondering if my ISA would make a difference if i declared that it was for the MA i was funding in september as the Uni i am applying for to do my MA require proof i can fund myself and as such i would not be using that money for my own personal gain but for future study and therefore would be accounted for?

Yes, they will take it into account as the fund is intended as a last resort, for people who may otherwise be forced to give up their course.

You are not in this position as you have funds available to you.

Applied through my uni on the 3rd March. I am from a low income family, am dyslexic, in my 3rd year and am having to support my boyfriend as he is unemployed without a penny to his name and waiting for JSA to come through.
  • hey this is my forst post

just wondering where I stand. I have absolutly no money, and probably enough food for a week and a £600 gas bill, phone and internet has been cut off as I have missed payments as I havn't got any money to pay for it now, I have used all my overdraft and even credit card to pay for rent. I have told the ALF people at my uni this and they Declined me for it! I see some people here are getting their money and spending it on things like cars etc and I cant even afford food to live on and thats all i want really, enough to live on!!! I am going to appeal the desicion but if it is unsuccessful is there any other funding available??? or will i just have to drop out of university and sign on or something? thanks

even if the ALF says yes, you won't get your money within a week.... you need a plan B anyway. it also won't be anything close to enough money to cover a £600 and clear your credit cards to prevent you from being in the same position in 6 months time. you need to seriously sit down and assess your financial position.

do you have a student loan? what are your outgoings (rent, bills etc)? what are your debts? do you have a part time job? what other sources of income are you getting/expecting at any future date? have you been to speak to someone in student services?

it is also worth looking at the DFW board and seeing the sticky on how to create a SOA - that should help you work out all your incomings and outgoings.

  • I work around 20-25 hours a week to pay my mortgage whilst studying so I guess I don't have a chance of any free money.

I am not generalising everyone here but this scheme seems to be yet another government incentive to reward those who can't be bothered working. I'm sure there are plenty of people who need this money and can't find employment so please don't feel offended by my post if you fit into this category. It just seems to me that the whole thing encourages people to be financially irresponsible.

I have just received the second installment of this grant and I also work to pay my mortgage while studying full time (and paid my own course fees of £4000 - post grad) so I cant agree with your stance.

I was very grateful to receive the money, its made a real difference.

Got an award of £1250, which I am chuffed to bits with and feel very lucky to have received. :D

I've just been turned down and will now most likely have to leave my course, it is my dream course and i was due to finish in September anyway so I am not happy.

They say that they have to calculate it based on me getting a full student loan even though i am not entitled to it, they also have to assume i pay £54 per week or les on rent and £11 per week on travel despite the fact i have to pay £80 per month to travel to my placements.

I have been looking for work fora long time have only just found something and have to wait for a CRB to come through so i wont start it in time for it to make much of a difference to wether i have to leave.

I totally agree- not wanting to be nasty but the government seem to cut in part of the sector (those gaining ELQs) and carry on with these schemes that the public aren't really aware of or aren't publicised enough.
