The mortgage scheme sounds like a good idea for us maybe it would take the pressure off for a year but dont they pile the interest on afterwards does anyone know

No, I only get a maintenence loan but I have to pay my tuition fees out of that.

I was at uni some years back and, ironically, had to pull out for financial reasons :( . This means that I've only been eligible for the maintenence loan for the past two years and any money I have managed to scrape together from working over the summer.

My bf was living with me up until recently (but things didn't work out and he is moving out in a few weeks). He has been supporting me over the past two years, otherwise I would have either had to pull out or not been able to try again for my degree in the first place.

I will be able to apply for my full loan entitlement next year, thank god. But in the mean time, if I can't find work I do not know how I am going to get by.

I've been told about a clinical trial I might be eligible for in the summer, so there could be light at the end of the tunnel if I get chosen to take part :j.....*fingers, toes and everything crossed*
This sucks, I feel so bad for you.

I mean, my situation isn't even bad, and I only applied for the grant because I got a letter thru saying "you are eligible and we recommend you apply..". I was happily surviving on my student loan and grant due to low family income. It seems very unfair on people genuinely struggling like yourself.

What gets me, is that your situation seems so dire, yet you have been awarded next to nothing compared to some of us. I admit I went OTT on the form and made it out that my situation is worse than it is whilst calculating outgoings and money coming in, but of course everybody is going to do that! I hope you did, too?!

Can you not contest the decision? I am sure I read about that somewhere..

How about being a tour rep in Mexico for a few weeks? Heard they're paying megabucks recently.. God knows why ;)

No. >.< I didn't go ott with the form because I didn't think I would need to. I thought it was just so obvious from my bank statements and form that I have to pay rent, bills and get food but from an income of virtually nothing.

I also thought the fact that I had to contact them to let them know they can't reach me by phone because I've had to have it disconnected might have been a very big clue :o

I will have to look and see if it is possible to appeal. Maybe I was just unlucky and a person, for whom mathematics isn't their calling, assessed my form lol Maybe I'll have better luck with a second opinion _party_ I've got everything to lose, so it can't hurt to ask.:rotfl:

If I can add again what the finance person at the Uni said to me - even before you fill in your outgoings and incomings, the government assume that you get as a student £150 per week (even if you get nothing) and all your expenses each week are around £60 (incl rent, bills, food etc), so in their eyes you already have a massive surplus of cash. Maybe they then look at outgoings to see if there is any extra, but they may have fibbed to me to stop me appealing. It all seems barmy. I just did everything honestly - it did not occur to me to sex it up as I thought having absolutely no income would be a cinch. Apparently not.

I wonder if Jacqui Smith had this much trouble claiming for her 'second' home...

Gish, that sounds reactionary, but I kinda want to know who it focuses on. I got the single parents thing from the questions and the debt thing also from there. I think I got the ex-prisoners thing from all the funds that seem available for that. Really don't mean to offend anyone there...

Disabled students also get priority (I am one, I should know!), as do those estranged from their parents (again, that's me) and those in exceptional circumstances (well I'm currently Homeless/in temporary unsuitable accommodation so...).
Disabled student desperately trying to earn some money...!

Lesson for next time: When 99% of people are also bending the truth, don't be the 1% who decides to be 100% truthful when filling in your ALF form!

I hope you get an appeal, seems like you deserve the ££ a lot more than some people do :)

Thanks Dany!l. But being untruthful totally goes against my nature. I don't know what else I could possibly have told them that would have gone in my favour anyway.

I just hope the 99% and 1% get what they actually deserve eventually ;)
