  • Hi,

I am a postgraduate student studying in London. My source of funding was made redudant earlier this year, so I am commuting to London every day. I have applied for this fund to help me meet the costs that I am incurring (for example I need a new prescription for my glasses), I was honest in my application but they have told me that I don't meet any of the criteria and therefor cannot get any money.

Could you please advise me on what I can do now? I am desperately short of money and this situation is causing me great stress.

  • Have you applied for a career development loan, who pays your tuition fees?

sarah512, if you have a low income you can apply for help with health costs through the NHS Low Income Scheme/ HC1 form.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • The career development loan stipulates that I must stay in the UK for at least a year after I graduate from my Masters to make sure that I start paying the money back. I commenced this course so that I could go over - seas to do an Internship after having finished.
    - is the access to learning fund not intended to be used for a new glasses prescription? I need them for when I read. Am I allowed to apply for the HC1 as well as Access to Learning Fund?

The ALF would expect you to apply for any benefits you are entitled to before applying to them. The HC1 will cover the cost of lenses and basic frames, therefore you will not need to apply for additional funding.

I have been waiting for my student grant to come through for a while now and things are getting a bit desperate. My loan arrived and went straight back out on bills owed, it basically lasted about 4 days :eek::eek: as it just literally went on everything that we had held off on till it arrived.

Will I be eligible to claim for something on this? We are slightly over on our outgoings to our income and have overdrafts, loans and credit cards already so they aren't options as they are maxed.

I am a bit concerned that they might say something like get a job as my course is 2 days a week, but the other 5 I am looking after my daughter as the childcare would cost more than I would earn

I haven't heard of this before so that would be amazing if I could fill in a form and get some help!

You may be offered a short term loan. This would need to be paid back when your grant comes through.

I got one in my final year (due to not being able tow work and getting in a mess)but i wouldn't say they are desperate to give them away. If you don't need the money for chrissakes don't take it for the hell of it, there are people who genuinely NEED that money to survive. It really !!!!es me off that you'd suggest taking away something when you don't really need it at the expense of those who do.

  • Hi all,
    I've just applied and I'm a bit concerned what's gonna happen now:confused:.
My situation is rather critical and dnt really know what to do if won't get it. Do you think they will give it to me?
About a week ago lost my job, my bf is about to be made redundant (without right to redundancy pay), travelling to mu uni 4 times p/week, spending approx. 40 quid (and it got to the point when can't afford it!).
Other than that my basic kitchen appliances got broken, our house is literally falling appart (high humidity) and we both got loans to pay.
Dnt know what else can I do; I'm not eligible to get an overdraft on my student account, dnt want to take anymore loans and have more and more bills to pay:eek:
Anyone can have any idea whether, and if so, how much would i be able to get from learning fund???
