Hi
I'm a long time lurker of MSE and I've bitten the bullet finally after years of hoping to study and have enrolled myself on these courses starting Sept/Oct this year. I'm going to struggle to get to the tutorials and I wondered if anyone else here is studying them at the same time?
I'm hoping to go on to the BPS accredited Psych. degree with a view to studying Forensic Psych. post-grad.
Also, has anyone who has done more than 60 points with the OU in one year got any advice? I know I'm looking at around 24+hrs a week which, as a SAHM with 3 children at Primary, shouldn't be too difficult! I'm working my way through various Psych./Criminology/Maths textbooks at the moment as "time-management" practise and to revise subjects i haven't looked at since I left college 17 years ago
.
Thanks for looking!

I've been studying with the OU for last 2 years I have a 2 year old and a 6mth old. I started when my son was born and did a 60 point course at Level 1. In Nov I started a level 2 course @ 30 points and now as well as getting ready for my exam I am doing DD121 the first half of DD100.
As long as you manage your time well and look at when TMA's etc are due you should be ok. when are the courses starting?? if they started you should be ok as you will have got into the course.
Hope this has helped and enjoy your studying0 -
Thank Kittycat. My courses start in September and October so a little while to go yet, but I'm doing loads of pre-study and reading in the hope a having a good understanding of the concepts before I start and maybe make a little headway, I shall know when the pre-study material arrives at the end of this month if I have been reading the right things! I just took a look at the courses I am doing, and the ones I would like to do eventually, and picked some of the recommended books.
Good luck with your studies - your time management must be fantastic! Two of my children are 18 months apart and I felt like I was chasing my tail all the time without studying!"I married beneath me, all women do." - Nancy Astor 1879-1964

I'm just coming towards the end of DD100 and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. That said I am looking forward to doing my next course as I've found the level 1 course a little bit too general. The thing I've really enjoyed is learning how to think again!
I didn't contemplate doing 2 courses simultaneously as I thought it would be too much to take on - but I work full time as well as having two children!
How long is it since you last studied? It may be better to just do one course initially and then move onto a heavier workload depending on how you get on?0 -
My best advice for maths courses (don't know if this works for other subjects) is to attempt the TMA questions as you complete the relevant block, whilst its still fresh in your mind. The TMA booklet usually mentions which block relates to which question. Good luck!0

I left college in '91so a while since I've done 'proper' study, but every now and again, I get a subject in my head and then read, read, read so I'm still pretty fresh with taking things in and learning new things. I bought one of the maths books recommended for prior reading for the MU120 course and completed it in 2 days so I think I should be ok with that one, although I intend to get another book of a higher level and work through that one just to be sure. I've read through a couple of social sciences text books to get a feel for the subject; I've got quite an analytical mind and I retain the most obscure facts and figures quite easily so hopefully I'll be ok, I don't want to get complacent though so I shall keep reading until my course starts. I'm reading Margaret Donaldsons Childrens Minds as my bed-time book at the moment as it's a recommended book for a course I'm thinking about doing next year or 2010 and I've got a couple of Criminology books to read as Criminal/Forensic Psychology fascinates me.

Thanks, it's the TMAs I'm probably most concerned about, the reading and studying is probably going to be manageable as it's something I do anyway but putting what I've learnt into words/reports for someone else to read is another thing, I haven't had to do that for a long time! Whilst I'm good at remembering things, I tend to be not so good at explaining them to other people! I also have a tendency to drone on and on and on and on................ :rotfl:
Kittycat: Finally remembered to login to the OU mailboxSorry for the delay!

Well, the prep work turned up for MU120 last week and I've completed the diagnostic test modules (2 wrong answers - one of those because I didn't read the question properly so wrote down the wrong information ) so I am pretty pleased with that!
I'm now working through the Preparatory Resources book A and doing quite well with it - I'm amazed at how much maths has actually stayed in my head after 16/17 years :rotfl:
Haven't had any prep for the DD100 course yet, so it's pretty easy fitting it all in at the moment.
Hope all ok Kittycat - haven't heard from you for a while"I married beneath me, all women do." - Nancy Astor 1879-1964

:hello: slick-chic85! Good luck to you too for September, you're going to have your hands full! How old is your eldest?
I thought about doing one of the openings course, but decided to jump in at the deep end. The MU120 prep work is like a small course in it's own right as there are two workbooks, a diagnostic quiz and a CMA to be completed before the course starts! It's a good job I'm loving it - although I don't remember getting this excited about Maths when I was at school! I will admit on here, as it is anonymous(!), that when the thunderstorms started this afternoon, I stuck a DVD on for the children so I could work through another of the Book A modules
It's nice to find someone studying the same course at the same time. My husband works daft hours most weeks so I probably won't make many, if any, of the tutorials. Apparently they're supposed to really help, too.
I think I may keep this thread updated with how things are going if no-one minds. I tell my husband about the courses and what I've done or am doing, and, although he makes the right noises I know his brain is away with the fairies :rotfl:
Please keep in touch and let me know how you get on - we can spur each other on when we need it
BTW - love your sig"I married beneath me, all women do." - Nancy Astor 1879-1964
