Thats another thing I wondered, How many of you's doing an open uni course have a job in the same field? I am doing M255 at the min, We had to post about ourselves on firstclass, all the others already have degrees or well paid jobs in IT, I have a job in something no where near IT, infact we dont even have a computer at work.

I'm a Stay At Home Mum, with no idea what she wants to be when she grows up :D

I'm currently doing DD100 (social sciences) and MU120 (maths), enrolled on DB123 (personal finance) ready for May and MST121 (maths, again!) for next September.

Mum of 3. eldest is also doing MST121, so I suppose you could say there's a tenuous connection to my maths studies. Previously my job was in pensions, but at that time I was studying computing & psychology, so not too close a connection there either.

:hello: Hey Dragonfly and welcome :)

You should be fine with 60 points (says she!), you'll manage it without realising soon enough but it will be a bit 'testing' to begin with unless you follow the directions for the courses about planning your study etc. Once you've got into the stride of it, you'll be fine :)

I love the look of the 2 other courses there - archaeology fascinates me to a certain degree, but I may try to fit in the Forensic Science short course (*mentally makes time next September between courses*). How did you find the SA188? What are you planning to do long-term with these courses?

We'll be able to give you some pointers on DD100 in February as I think most of us are starting it this month :)

See you've gone and done it now - I looked up the S187 and now I'm trying to fit in a cert in Contemporary Science :( At this rate I'm going to be studying til I retire ;). I can see why people say it's addictive!

Good luck with your studies and please pop back often for a chat and an update, we even serve coffee - have one on us :coffee:

    Hey HomeSpun and everyone else!!

Thankyou for the welcome!! SA188 was great but I have always loved Archaeology from a young age, and I can wait to start on S187 I'll let you know how I find it :D .

I'm hoping to do a degree in Criminology and Psychological Studies but then I sometimes wonder if I should do Enviromental instead lol! Think its a good job DD100 is the level 1 course in both!!

How are you finding your courses??

    :hello: Dragonfly

Good to see you again. Hope it's all going well for you :)

:o I originally wanted to do psych and crim, but now I've started my maths course, I love it and I'm thinking about doing either Economics and Mathematical Sciences or Mathematics and Statistics. I didn't really 'enjoy' maths as such at school, but I never found it tricky, it just kind of made sense and I've pretty much always worked in Accounts or Data/Market Analysis, even if I start working for a company in another dept, I always seemed to end up in one of those :rotfl:.

I did start my 'proper' CIMA training, but gave it up as it seemed the obvious route for me, and I didn't want to do obvious, if that makes sense. Now I've found my Maths course so enjoyable I think I might carry that on and see where it takes me - the government do a Assistant Economist graduate scheme and they seem keen on OU students, LSE do a distance learning post-grad course which looks good (although I haven't exactly heard good things about LSE distance courses..............) and the OU do a taught Masters in Maths so I have a few options in mind. I'll decide which degree when I've decided how much I'm enjoying the DD100.
How are you finding your courses??

    :j

Well, you may have spotted that I'm loving the Maths lol. The DD100 I'm struggling to get into. I have no trouble picking up the maths books and reading and scribbling for ages, I can't seem to get past the first few pages of the DD100 book - which maybe a problem with a TMA due next week and nothing that I actually read of it sticks :o.

I'm going to hide the maths books tomorrow and concentrate on DD100, hoping I pick it up and run with it. It's a bit strange that I feel like this as I spent a long time before the course started reading criminology text books and the TMA due is about crime reporting, which I covered - maybe I 'over-killed' a bit with the prep reading .

Anyway, ignore my moan! Everything should be ok soon, it's probably just early course nerves or something. How are you finding it?

(I'm still trying to fit in that Contemporary Science cert :o)

    Hi ydraiggoch73!

    This is from post #13:
I bought the two books which were recommended in the very small DD100 prep book that I received a couple of weeks ago Social Sciences: The Big Issues and Good Essay Writing. I've only read the first chapter of the Big Issues and flicked through the Essay book so far so I can't say how good they are but the are both OU books. Good luck with the financial help - they're pretty quick and very helpful so you should hear back very soon.
I don't know of any others as the course provides all the texts needed, but I shall be reading properly (!) tomorrow and I'll let you know if I come across any :)

Is this your first course with the OU?

    Good luck

Crikey just noticed the time - what on earth am I still doing here? lol

  • Hi,

I started DD100 Introduction to Social Sciences in October. Just trying to put together my plan for TMA 07. Argh!
