like I've said the job market around here (Leicester) has been hit by economic circumstances though now it's getting better thanks to investment - but while things were tough for me they wouldn't help.
Just want to say that I think you're perfectly justified in expecting a bit of help -- I'm a Londoner and although the job market's pretty competitive here it's not impossible to find something if you look hard enough and you don't mind doing crappy telemarketing or envelope stuffing jobs. But I know a lot of my friends at uni from different parts of the country really can't get summer jobs and sometimes people forget that jobs don't grow on trees.
  • Here are my circumstances:

I live in a houseshare with one other person.
Outgoin bills including food is £550 per month
I've just gone part-time from a full time job, now earning £600 a month (was £1100)
I've had to pay for the course myself
I have received no other financial support from uni or government.

The course i am doing at uni is not a degree - hence why i don't get a student loan, it's a course run by the university to enable students to undertake a degree the following year (like an Access course).
    I am eligable to apply.

I've got debts of £5000 - made up of credit cards, loans, overdraft charges, mobile bills etc (don't think these are deemed as prority debts, but they're still debts i have to pay off every month!).

Your input would be really appreciated,

    Thanks
    Emma

I don't know but I'd have thought not.

Do the student finance department have a web page as that may tell you.

Otherwise just drop them an email and ask?

I am on a NHS funded course attracting a bursary of £8000 which is made up of basic bursary dependants allowance and PLA. I have also applied for the student loan which will be £2265 (approved just not through yet). I also work which i receive £4300 per annum I work 16 hours a week. I also gert working families tax credit £199 a week. . This totals about £28000 when family allowance is included. Yes this is a lot and despite having very high personal debts I can just manage ,I am single mum to 3 kids. My dilema is that i am in the second week of my course and have not yet moved into the clinical placement which make up 60% of my course. Whilst at college I am putting in 25 hours so can manage to work for 16 hours but come placement time i will be unable to work as much thus having a drop in wages and also loosing the working tax credit . My placements are 9-5 monday to friday. I will still work but I need to spend some time with the kids. I estimate drop in wages and tax credits will loose £100 a week.
My question is do you think I will be eligible to aply for the hardship fund if I apply now and explain my position wiil they take into consideration my drop in income.
Any help and advice will be great.

As I said on your thread, yes, you are eligible to apply now.

They will definitely take your drop in income into account and will not expect a single parent with 3 children, and a full time placement, to work.

However, they will not take you debts into account, nor the cost of them, and they have a cap on the amount they will allow for household costs and clothing etc. The problem with this is you still have a 'reaonable' income, compared to people surviving on a loan iyswim?

Best thing to do is get the application in as you have nothing to lose by trying.

Definitely see if you are still able to claim ctc too!

    Good luck with it.
  • did anyone find out if you can apply for this while doing OU course? I wil be starting 120 point course in February which is equivalent to 12 hours a week (which is classed as full time) while also working full time (but do have debts and things)

I would apply anyway as the worst outcome is you'll be turned down. All you have to lose is a bit of your time.
  • Humph, I need a video player for my course, but haven't got one. haven't got a tv either. so obviously havent got a tv licence. Was told I couldnt have the funding cos its not part of my course. Have sent the details back with the syllabus which clearly states I need it for the course. Better luck this time I suppose!
The !!!!!! of it is I DONT WANT A TV!!!!

Can't you use a tv/vcr in the library?
  • Brilliant. I'm on it.

(I'll be back when i'm stuck with the form  )

oh also, i'm a bit worried that my summer spending might look bad. and possibly september is the worst time to apply?!
