You can't run the .exe standalone, it has to be in a proper DOS/command box. This way it won't close after running.

Is my whois tool not connecting because the server is not responding or because of our company firewall - is it working for anyone else?

What WHOIS tool are you using? the sysinternals one works well with the EURid WHOIS database.

I havent had an email yet but the two domains I wanted are now unavailable. I suppose this is going to take time and I can't get the whois.eu to work.

I now think that I got https://www.stephenson.eu but the other has been taken by an internet consultantcy.
