    AHA!!!

    Remember this...?

On the other machine I have:-
    • Create global objects
    • Impersonate a client after authentication
..and probably more which aren't on this one. How do I go about creating these keys/settings?

I went back there to check and see if those keys were now present on the dodgy laptop - and they ARE...

    BUT....
Log on as a batch job, when clicked on shows:-

    Assigned to:
    • Laptopname\laptopusername
    • System
    on the "good" laptop

But on the "dodgy" one THERE'S NO ENTRY FOR "SYSTEM".

So is this it? THE missing key? The one that should clear up some/most/all of the errors I've been seeing?

What other areas in here (or nearby) should I be looking at for possible other missing wrong keys? I kept seeing lots of dhcp warnings, for example... do I need to find and check those?

If the net logon service is running on start up it will look for the specified domain. Try setting the net logon service (run > services.msc) to manual and restart

Thanks, will do that shortly, but first an update...

I sorted out the event viewer. It was set to empty manually rather than either of the overwrite options and, needless to say - it was full. Now cleared and set to overwrite.

    This is what I have:-

    ERROR:- Service Control Manager
The DNS Client service hung on starting.
    INFORMATION:- Tcpip
The system detected that network adapter IEEE.802.11gWLAN11g network adaptor was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adaptor.
Now I have THREE of those entries from the last boot because that's all I've done on that laptop before opening event viewer...

They are timed from 14:17:04 through to 14:19:19

The Service Control Manager Entry is timed earlier at 14:16:51

That's all I have. Nothing to give me a clue as to why the hang nor why the card should install three times in quick succession... unless that's because it's "registering" the three computers on the net???

EDIT: just looked back at the event viewer on the dodgy laptop and I now have another FIVE new Tcpip entries!

    Just looked.

Net log on service IS set to manual. Service status:stopped.

Hang on while I check what the good one is set to....

    ....

..the settings are identical an all tabs on both computers.

Does anybody suppose that for some strange reason the card behaves better on the "good" laptop than it does on the dodgy one?

It clearly keeps "losing" and changing connection speeds, and frequently drops off line and then gets back on again.

I now have a total of 14 Tcpip entries since the start-up.

BUT... the Service Control Manager hang happened FIRST.

So is that hang the cause of the hiccups with the card...? Or is it 'tother way about? Hmm... only the one SCM entry, and I'd have thought if the card was causing the problem I'd have loads of SCM's.... Yes/No ?

    EDIT:- Right...

Just clicked on "my network places" and then on "computers near me". I've got a hang and the task manager says services.exe is using 99% of the CPU time.

When it stops I'll edit back in with the event log....

MORE EDIT:- As soon as I hit "computers near me" it kicked the card off line. Just tried it twice and it did the same thing - although on the second try I didn't get the hang and it grabbed the network list as soon as it reconnected.

ERROR: Service Control Manager: 3000ms time

How else do you plan on ruling out a hardware issue? A Linux-based live CD is the quickest option, but if you've got a Windows XP disc and a bit of spare time on your hands you could create your own instead.

You do realise that if I create the linux and then install it on the laptop.... regardless of whether it solves the problem or not.... I'm STILL going to have to put the win2000pro back onto it for the ultimate end user?

And given that *I* have never used linux and may well find myself troubleshooting on a system I have even less of a clue about than windows... I really do have to think of this option as the ultimate "do or die OMG what the flying fynn have I let myself in for" sort of thing. And I have grave doubts about my ability to mix and match a network with winXP on one machine, win2000pro on another, and linux on the third!

I know you mean it kindly and helpfully, honest - but I am VERY reluctant to go there unless I absolutely have to.

EDIT: In any event I shall at least wait until I have a genuine win2000pro installation disk in my grubby mits and give it a go first because, as I say, I'm going to have to put it back on the laptop before handing it over.

A live CD does not utilise the hard disk drive; it boots from the disc and operates entirely in RAM. Some include the means to install themselves, but this is secondary to its real purpose which is to allow a user to test-drive a new operating system.

    Oh, OK, I see.

    Right.

I'm going to take a break - my brain hurts. THEN I'll go grab the live CD and give it a go. In the meantime, see the following post...

    Phew!

    OK... here goes...

I added in that "System" key into security, and I ALSO added the user of the good laptop into the user list of the dodgy one; and vice versa - so they are both registered users even though the impersonation stuff is all set and checked.

Somewhere in there windows update installed a whole bunch of KB's.

NOW... when I log onto one laptop from another I don't have any DNS problems nor have to go through the log in routine. So that's sorted.

Clicking on "My network places" STILL kicks the wireless card off line, then it recovers and displays the usual options.

After that I can wander my network at will and don't have any log on issues.

The ONLY error or warning I have left now is the SCM saying it hung on start-up and there's no further data or information for that one.

The card is still regularly dropping off-line and then reconnecting.

I'm beginning to not like the card! :)

Just checked the log on the good one and all I've got there is loads of Tcpip entries too, so I guess that's normal ... ?
