Hmm...
Yeahbut... as I said - I have to give the laptop to a basic user who's only familiar with windows - so I can't install linux on it.
I didn't understand from your early posts that the disk was linux based, that it would allow me to access my system, but that I wouldn't have to "install" it.
Actually, if I'd based my assessment on the "supplied" iso only, and not created a winXP version - I'd still have stayed clear of it. A couple of good programs on it - but unless it loaded wrongly - it was godawful in terms of presentation and usage.
The winXP version, on the other hand, is a treasure!
I honestly can't thank you enough for persevering and driving through my tunnel vision and, it has to be said, my thick skull

I can't remember, but it came as part of the download. I can't access Program Files on the PC from here. Windows won't share it.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Part of what download? Most modern linux distributions look better than Windows XP, despite - or perhaps due to - there being no standard desktop environment for developers to focus their attention on.
Take Kubuntu for example, which uses KDE by default.0 -
Whichever mirror I got it off. Sheesh! Er... hang on...

The Ultimate Boot CD? That's not a Linux distribution; it's little more than a collection of DOS utilities! :rotfl:...ubcd411.iso0 -
Told you it was carp

So what was it doing being downloaded with the proper ubcd stuff -- AND using the name?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. The majority of the tools on the disc were originally floppy-based, so they need an interpretive layer to get them going. That layer is probably Linux-based, but it was never going to be a shining example of the breed - the Ultimate Boot CD was designed from the outset to run on as wide a variety of systems as possible. What use is a low-level diagnostic utility if you can't even run it?So what was it doing being downloaded with the proper ubcd stuff -- AND using the name?
That Windows 'version' is a totally different kettle of fish; it's really just a preinstallation environment with a few extras thrown in.
Ergo, I suggest you refer to the following for clarification on a few points:0 -
Sheesh! MORE homework!
OK... I will take a look later.
