Win2000pro - preparing network connections hangs - services.exe

The "good one" is at SP4 but the dodgy one is only at SP3 and, despite it being switched on is clearly not using automatic updates, and I run into all sorts of weird and wonderful problems if I try to use the Microsoft Update Service directly.
I'm fairly convinced that some dot sys or dot dll is missing or corrupted and it's in the area of networking. DNS redirects or something like that. But I can't prove it and certainly don't know enough to recognise an incorrect setting even supposing I was looking in the right places. It seems to affect setting up and changing settings of anything to do with networks and, as I say, hangs with "sevices.exe" hogging processor time at 99%
Edit: Hmmm... presumably if I knew what KBnnnnnn's to look for I could download and save them on the good laptop - then shift them onto the dodgy one and run them in sequence there....?
I wonder if a google search for "Please tell me all the KB numbers which have been issued for Windows 2000 Professional since SP3" will work...?
Your best, and least confusing course of action is to download and install SP4.0 -

Yes, that exactly what I did and, to cut a long story short, downloaded it onto my PC, then pinched the ethernet cable out of the router and used it to connect a direct cable connection to the laptop, moved the file over and installed.
Once Win2000pro SP4 had installed it rebooted and it STILL hung on "preparing network connections" !!!!
I disabled the LAN connection and it hung again.
I was watching with Task Manager.
ALL the other loaded processes used up just 1min 9secs of CPU time between them through the boot and then the disconnect.
services.exe used FIVE minutes and 49secs. !!!!
<sigh>
So.... next?
EDIT:- The upgrade has done me some good though... the wireless connection is now of better quality in terms of speed and stability. Just remembered there was an addendum to SP4, try downloading and installing it and see if the issue is still there.
If not, at least it rules out a hell of a lot of other things..0 -

Downloaded and done, thanks
And it STILL hangs!
I've got auto updates set for 8pm and I'm hoping it will catch up with anything else now. Just got to set power save stuff to do nothing just to make sure that update has a fully operational computer to work with...Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Yep, I have the installation disk for the wireless card and I also ensured that no other card software was present before starting my installation.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. check the system and application log for errors (red crosses) and see if any relate to the networking side of things0 -
slushpuppy wrote: »So did you install the whole of the CD software or just the driver???
Because as I said earlier, if you install the bundled software aswell as the driver (intel) for example will take over your connections instead of windows hadling connectivity, if you have installed all of the wireless CD uninstall it and just install the driver.
Yes guv, but as I mentioned wa-a-ay back up the thread... I've been sharing this card between both identical laptops and it works just fine on the other one with the bundled software installed.
So I have to ask, knowing that - do you still think it will help to uninstall the software?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I'll do that as soon as I move the card back into the dodgy laptop. Red? You want red? I've got LOADS of it...
RED ERRORS:-- Server
- The server could not bind to the transport \Device\NetbiosSmb because another computer on the network has the same name. The server could not start.(No it ruddy well doesn't!) (I'll re-name it *anyway* and see what happens.
- Service Control Manager
- The DNS Client service hung on starting (you think!?!?)
- MrxSmb
- The master browser has recieved a server announcement from the computer MYPLACE (that's my PC - so "who" is the master browser?) that belives that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_{E)01D1...blah The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.
Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the DHCP server) for the Network Card with network address #hex no The following error occured:-
The semaphore timeout period has expired. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.
I'll be back...Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Computer renamed and added to the workgroup.
Still hangs...
Service Control Manager- The DNS Client service hung on starting
- The server could not bind to the transport \Device\NetbiosSmb because another computer on the network has the same name. The server could not start.
- ** the computer named is the OLD NAME not the new one!
- Your computer was unable to automatically configure the IP parameters for your Network Card with the network address #hexno The following error occurred during configuration: The parameter is incorrect. (? which parameter? the #hexno?)
MRxSmb is now a warning (no longer an error)- The redirector was unable to register the domain WORKGROUP onto transport NetBT_Tcpip {E01DE...blah for the following reason: Transport has been taken off line.
When I look at "My Network Places" it shows the same thing.
So how do I dump the icon/entry/connection for MyOLDname?
At least all the master browser stuff has disappeared!
*** woudl I be better off starting again with a new workgroup name and a complete set of new names for all the computers?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there.
