Win2000pro - preparing network connections hangs - services.exe

Downloading an ISO image of a Windows OS from a third-party is fraught with peril; there's no way of telling what's actually in it without comparing it bit-by-bit with a genuine copy. If you know someone with a Technet subscription you might be able to get a copy that way, but it's a long shot at best.
Have you considered installing a Linux distribution instead?0 -
You can download a genuine unaltered ISO image, I don't see the problem....
You buy/own the product key, not the disk.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Yeah, as I said I'm not into torrent et al and (probably) reputable sites charge for the iso file (well... registration/membership) so what's the point?
In the end I went to Amazon and bought a copy (with key) for £25. It might have been possible to find it a bit cheaper somewhere, but at least with Amazon I know I'm safe.
Now... the latest...
Since this laptop seems to want to prepare network connections I decided to give it a network to CONNECT to. My main PC and the other laptop were a doddle, but this one needed some some extra bits installing. All done now, including printer sharing.
And the blasted thing is STILL firkling about preparing network connections while the other one doesn't!
For a bet, since I had to install stuff on this one to get the network - there's still something ELSE missing.

sorry, gave u duff information,
Do the following.
Start > Run Menu.
Type in mmc
In file menu, click add/remote templates
Add in the one called group policy for local computer.
Then look for the above i listed,
hope this helps. it sounds like your machine is struggling to bring network connections up, or looking for some form of server to log onto, (windows 2000 was renound for trying to look on the internet for a server!) before it lets you log in.
I'm confident the above setting will do the trick. It stops windows waiting for network connections, they will prepare in the background instead and provide you with the login screen.
Let me know0 -
Just answering somebody elses suggestion here; It's not a DNS issue or IP Address, that will hang on "loading your personal settings" if there was and at least let you into the login screen quicker. This is prior to the IP stack loading itself.
You need to stop windows waiting for it.
A fw other things to check mate:
What workgroup your PC is a member of (hope its not a domain member at all)
What logs there are in event viewer, both application and system. It may be worth also hunting through for anything in the group policies in relation to "startup scripts". If something is running, e.g. AV then that can stop your IP Stack from loading correctly.
Go into "Network Connections", go to the Advanced Menu in Explorer at the top, and look at Adapter Binding order, post back results or a screenshot here if that helps. It may be that some form of IPX or Netware is above the TCP/IP or a Deterministic Network Enhancer device or anti virus filter is getting in its way
Sorry to be so technical!!0 -
OK guys - when I set up my network I noticed that there was ANOTHER one listed on this machine that is NOT on the other laptop!
I currently can't delete the darn thing - but, for a bet, THIS is what the "preparing network connections" is all about.
So guys which of your suggestions will deal with this best please?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. It's almost certainly the right sort of idea - but we're looking in the wrong place. This is Win2000 remember. Running mmc gets me a thing called Console1(Root) which has nothing in it and no "File" in the menu.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Hang on a sec... I must have done something right somewhere in the last half hour because that errant network is no longer showing!
Right... time to watch a reboot.
