You could try cloning the good one. They'd share the same product keys, but that isn't necessarily a problem when you're using Windows 2000.
Then again, you're presumably going to reinstall from scratch as soon as that disc arrives, so why bother?0 -

Erm...
..which will not be until THIS problem is sorted, and believe me - with uninstallers, cleanups, scrubbers, pgp that I have available it's highly unlikely; but yes, if I feel the need I shall reformat and re-install.
However, the plan is (when I've got some spare cash) to upgrade from 128Mb to 256Mb ram. Then I would be able to install my OEM winXP. Then, because 256Mb really is minimal for XP I would upgrade memory again to as high as the system will support.
That will surely take care of dissemination.
But until then I really want to get the current issue sorted!
Not least because, fingers crossed, I'm hoping it really is a software problem and not something to do with hardware! Which, obviously, is something I need to determine before spending my money.
So the issues at hand and which have my fully focussed attention right now are all detailed above...
..so what do you suggest I do NOW...?Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Not to mention little things like finding a good burning software that REALLY supports win2000... and I already know that current versions of a fair number of things that SAY they run on 2000 actually DON'T. Oh, and while I have CD drive I've no idea if it writes...
.. I could work round that by mirroring the "good" laptop into a folder on my PC across the network and then using all the stuff on my PC to create a disk, I suppose, but as you say - I might as well wait for the installation disk to arrive by snail mail.
Even so, since I haven't yet been able to pin this problem down... while I'm fairly sure it's a software problem - until it's been identified I can't yet rule out a possible hardware problem; and until I know which/what/where/why/how I won't be spending any money on upgrades which are "sure" to solve everything "somehow".
Ain't this all fun??Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. It still sounds like it's looking for a domain (Netlogon?).
Have you compared domain settings on each machine?
Local area connection > Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties > Advanced > DNS
I'd presume both should be empty if there's no specific DNS required in future0 -

Local? Oh, got you.
Nope TCP/IP are both set to defaults - obtain IP address and DNS address automatically.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Hmmm...
The cooling fan on the "good" laptop runs all the time and the laptop is cool.
The one on the "dodgy" one only runs intermittently and the whole rear half of the underside is quite warm!
While this won't be the cause of my problems since I started cold this morning - I can't find any reference to temperature monitoring in the BIOS, nor can I find anything in the Help & Support.
I suppose I could physically swap the fans to see if anything changes.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there.
