Ever failed a driving test ? Why?

  • A long time ago, but I failed my first one - I pulled out too early from a junction and examiner had to "drop anchors" for us!

On my second test, a van in front of me did the same thing - I braked and stalled - I didn't hit him though. At this point I thought history had repeated itself and just concentrated on getting it over with and getting the bad news. I was surprised when he said I'd passed and mentioned the incident with the van - he said that I reacted perfectly, stalling was OK under the circumstances and that I had restarted the car correctly and almost instinctively. He also said I actually seemed to relax and drive better afterwards!

Mind you, I also failed my IAM test for being too cautious - speeding down country lanes, giving a continuous commentary instead of concentrating on what you were doing and sounding your horn, so that you would be "in the right" if you hit anything seemed a bit unsafe to me.

I failed twice (3rd time lucky) - the first time i 'swan necked' when turning into a road (went over the white lines in the middle of the road), the second one i went into the wrong gear on a hill and stalled - it wouldve been a minor but because there was a car waiting behind me, that turned it into a major!

A girl i used to work with failed her first test because when the examiner asked her what she should look out for when opening her car door (in the days before the theory test) she said dog s*** and puddles - he meant other cars and bicycles!!!

Another " bar room story " that quite simply isn't true.

She may have failed on that, amongst other things, but not that alone.;)

I failed the first time. My instructor refused to let me have his learner car for the test, he said I wan't ready and it would reflect badly on him as an instructor !!! We had booked the test in advance thinking I would be ready and it was non refundable non moveable. So I figured why waste the test appointment, atleast take the test see what its like and get some experience.

I took the test in an Austin Princess, a really heavy car with no power steering :D The tester was scared most of the time :D But I was in control (honest). I failed on observation, understanding traffic lights and gawd knows what else.

Passed the next time with the instructors car. :D
  • i found one more site for free practice of theory test questions. also driving theory test software CD available for practice questions, its really nice for learner drivers. this site is www.theory-test.co.uk/

A great tip for doing your test, My neighbour who is an instructor told me test

when the examiner asks you to do something like take the next road on the left etc, this is when he looks at you so the the first thing you do when he asks you is check your mirrors thus the examiner will see you using your mirrors.

great tip and one i will use when i take my test.

  • I failed my first test many years ago sometime in the dark ages.
We were approaching an unmarked crossroads and the examiner actually said "watch this it's a bus route," unfortunately I didn't heed his words and yes, you've guessed, there was a bus crossing from the right which coincided with me reaching the junction. The bus driver had to do a rather quick emergency stop to avoid hitting us. He also had very choice words with the examiner! As a result the examiner stopped the test and we went back to the test centre with a definite fail. :o
I passed 2nd time, with the same examiner, he did remember me too. :p

Failed the first one, 18ish years ago for "overuse of the Handbrake". My instructor was furious and she kicked up a hell of a stink at the test center all to no avail. Retook it a month later and passed though.
