Welcome Vicki+1 and PepPop to our lovely thread.

PepPop - I think you've hit on the key to success there. Sticking with regular exercise, and trying to make it just a normal, regular part of your life will be how you'll both lose weight, and keep it off. The usual thing that happens is that we go full pelt with dedication to get the weight off, then we stop, and the weight creeps back on again. To be truly healthy, a bit of exercise has to be a part of it. If you get bored with the gym routine, why not go just a couple of times a week, but then introduce an exercise video at home, or a bike ride, brisk walk with your OH. Stephen Fry has lost lots of weight recently, and attibutes it to both cutting back on simple things such as carbs, and walking while listening to talking books on his ipod. Perhaps it just means finding a form of exercise that you can truly enjoy?

That could be down to my BF dragging me out for a bike ride last night 'round the block'. 5 miles later....:rotfl: We even went via another village!

HI Sarymclary. Thanks for the good advice. At the moment I've got a weeks holiday and decided to kick my butt into gear and spend at least a couple of hours a day in the gym (I think I've been watching too much of The Biggest Loser :rotfl:). Then hopefully I'll get the buzz back and it'll be easier to keep it up next week when i'm back at work.
I like the sound of your BFs idea of round the block :D

HI Victory, thanks for the encouragement. Wow, I'm impressed at your weight loss, that's fantastic. I have managed to lose weight before and got to about 3lbs of my goal weight then slowly put it back on. How do you manage to keep it off? (PS first reply to my first post - so cool )

I keep it off as sary says by planning, I can tell you what I am having for food today, tomorrow the next day:D it is all about keeping the eye on the ball, I have to admit I am always going to be a fat person in a thin persons body now so I have to jump through hoops to keep the carbs away, the portions down, write it all down in a food diary including drink as alcohol is very calorific, keep measurements of waist, hips, thigh etc and watch it come off and go down, take pics of before and after, have a goal, a purpose something to aim for the xmas ball and that beautiful outfit you have seen or someones wedding, be active, distract yourself by doing other things rather than just thinking about food:D

sary I don't know if this will help you carb wise but I have to limit mine and so I don't have any during the week, no sarnies bread wise, then at the weekends I do, I have rye bread and an open sandwich as the food doc advocates , the one slice and normally egg boiled, the kids love the weekend end and soldiers and because it is looked forward to it is really appreciated, that or WW toast wholemeal thick bread which is 1 point a slice so I can have 2 with WW beans, seems lovely to me because saturday treat is coming:D

I live a lot off lean chicken and turkey, salmon, mackerel, cod, swordfish, loads of veg, fruit, it is yes cheaper to fill up on carbs you are right but not good for the waist line, Iceland always make huge amounts because their food is so cheap for the people on lower incomes and mine is always full of people that have very little money to spend as they count it at the counter but to be truthful Iceland products are not the best for cals, salts, and sugars etc I used to buy it all from there but now I only go in for the WW ready meals and WW products because they are always £1 or cheaper that elsewhere.

Also if you have something coming up why not do what I do and 'offset it' I went out one sat night and was not sure of the foods etc as it just said food provided... so pulled back 200 cals per day starting on the monday to be able to 'splurge' without damage on the saturday , it worked because I ended up that week at a STS

I have had 2 hellish days with food, I have been walking around the house like a lost dog with hunger, not starving to rip someones arm off, no but never the less the food I have eaten has not been enough to keep me off thinking of food constantly so yesterday wrote all the xmas cards, wrapped all the presents that are going up north and wrote the Spain cards, made some more pots of gold for the teachers and much more besides just to keep hankering, could be boredom but don't think so, could be lack of food the right foods but not because I have it often, could be hormones but that is all fine and seen as I have such an analytical brain will not allow myself to give into anything unless I know the reason why and I don't, I do hope it passes though because it is ahhhhhhhh:rolleyes::D am now looking into making snowman soup but too tight to buy the cone cello bags off ebay:rotfl::rotfl:

Our garage electronic door has broke, never rains but pours eh:rolleyes: everytime I think I am getting GHD, something else we need to pay out for, the insurance excess is £150 so we hope it will be less than that to pay ourselves, the guy is coming this afternoon.

Managed to get so much sorted for xmas just realised it is still 11 weeks come friday:rotfl: and still the 16 year goes on that £100 is not enough:rolleyes:

Got an invite to a 50th yesterday, my OH bosses wife, don't know her, never seen her before in my life, on the invite it says 'money or voucher please no gifts' what a cheek, I made her a hamper and filled it with bits and bobs of botanics stuff I had, lots of cello, big bow done, money or vouchers:rolleyes:

I've never felt the need to limit carbs - I see them as an important fuel source for exercise and I like to maintain good carbohyrate levels, it keeps my energy up.

I do make an effort to save medium & high GI carbs for after workouts and during long distance, and low GI at other times, but I see that as a guide rather than a strict rule :)

So if anyone doesn't want to reduce their carbs, upping activity instead could be a way of offsetting it. Just my humble opinion!

Sary - thanks, and I'm sorry I seem to have missed your reply the first time!

Thank you Victory, wise words from you as usual. I am going to work harder at planning my mealtimes, particularly lunches. I am really hankering after some protein, and could do with some lean chicken to pick at, so will look out for some reduced in the supermarket later. I am the same with wanting to eat something, but trying to keep busy. It was easier when the weather was nice and warm, because I'd go out in the garden. There's less and less to do out there now, so it's indoors more. I make lots of cups of tea to keep me feeling fuller, and I put off eating meals by half an hour, just to make them feel more worthwhile. I have had some bread this week, but the plan is to try to keep any that I have to the weekend, but it has to be wholemeal. White bread is becoming an enemy of my tummy, as it really does play it up.

As for the money or vouchers for the boss' wife! Flaming cheek! If you're having a party, particularly one past your 21st, then I think it's just not 'the done thing' to expect gifts. It would have been far more in keeping with the current times to have stipulated 'no gifts please', and that would have taken the pressure off their guests. One should give a party for the enjoyment of celebrating with people you care about, not for the gifts you get for them coming. My sister's anniversary celebration must have cost about £3k, and she specifically asked her guests to not buy gifts, but to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Class isn't something you can acquire though, you either have it, or you don't. I think I know which camp the boss and his wife are in!

I would dearly love to have got Xmas sorted, but my lot here just cannot come up with lists of what they want, so I don't want to waste money buying things they don't need. As i pointed out to my 17 y/o yesterday, if he needs anything new these days, he'll be looking at providing most things himself from now on. We are supporting him while he gets his education, but that is a privilege, not a right. He needs to realise that he has to pull his finger out and try to earn some extra £. I have suggested he write to all the major companies nearby, and especially the fast food chains, because the skills gained there can so easily be transferred with him when he goes off to uni and has to work then too. Mcdonalds offer good flexible working hours, so it would be ideal. That's a work in progress though... (pardon the pun)! One of my friends has only just found out that her daughter failed her uni exams, and has had to drop out after 3 years, and accumulating a £36k debt! While the daughter was at uni the marriage broke up, the mum now lives in a much smaller house, and when the daughter came back during holidays was sharing a bed with her mum! Now she's back for good, so it's really upset the applecart. If I tell you that this friend of mine doesn't cope well in any crisis anyway, you can imagine how well that's going! Oh, and her son who's 17 and in my eldest's year at Grammar, is being threatened with being chucked out of school for not working hard enough either.

Hi all. Well weighed in this morning and its a 1lb loss for me this week. To be honest that suprises me as I've had a cold for the last 8 days and barely eaten anything, just random bits of toast, apple, and mini-milks. Had our engagement party at the weekend, didn't eat a thing, and all I drank was orange squash! But then I am now on day 13 of TOTM  I blame it firmly on my implant, the hormones seem to go low after the first year and my periods go haywire.

Thanks Victory - it's always good to have other confirm what I know I already know - it is worth hanging on. Doing all that you suggest already. As you say, it is just stressful and it will pass. My bestest ever lodger I really didn't take to on the phone - she turned up and the old instinct kicked in and she didn't leave for 7 yrs.
    Sary - don't time travel, you'll be burned as a witch:D.

Loads of good weigh ins...dinah (hope your feel better soon - those implants can be yuck) granny, sary, rosie and Nyk (I'm so proud:D):T:T Wedone too some sts'ers Victory - I meant to say last week, I was very impressed that you refused to panick over a 5lb totm gain and you were confident it would disappear. You wouldn't have been that calm a year or two back. Be v proud of your progress in your head not just eating habits IYSWIM
Welcome pepop :T- congrats on joining the forum and your 1st posts - it's addictive I warn you
Thanks missy - nice thing to say, though I feel I have struggled keeping up with newbies at the mo.

1lb on for me please granny - but I am actually quite pleased with that as it is totm.
Cat queen - I think it may be harder with a thyroid prob but best person to ask I guess is your dr, or google.

Must put dinner on: roast chicken pieces & veg.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

I can honestly say my eldest is driving me crazy, my sis called him ungrateful, selfish, materialistic and for every time he mentions that £100 is not enough for xmas knock a £10 off him so that he realises he is priveledged to get it, that it is not his god given right to get an xmas present let alone money and that many would be grateful for it, you see he is kicking off big style because the little one has got his present, an x box, second hand obviously but came with 4 games, 2 controllers, 2 head phones and a battery pack so it was a great deal but took it over the £100 ceiling to £120, eldest is demanding the same etc, OH is beside himself with annoyance, my sis wants him to live with her to show him some manners, me I feel sick to the stomach that our xmas, the planning, the hoping, the excitement, the worry over presents, money is all going to be shot because of the eldest ruining the day through his incessent moaning and demanding more when we cannot give him more regardless of his mates getting a laptop, an ipod touch, a new phone, we stretched ourselves to the limit last year to please with the wii and look what happened there, we had to sell it, that will stay with me for life.

My sis reckons that all the bills come first and the mortgage is their inheritance and it is right what she says but teenagers as they are these days are all into the latest gadgets and gizmos, he wants the in thing but as my sis said to me many a xmas or birthday I have sat her with nothing as you know just so they can have as it should be:rolleyes: we have the loveliest happiest 9 year old that shakes with excitement at the thought of xmas and never asks for anything, he mentions but never demands so it is a pleasure to give him and video him on xmas day, the other one is a vulture trying to drain us of blood, I mean when you think of it my little part time hours job will barely go to £100 so basically he wants me to work for a month just to hand it over to him while he sits upstairs on his x box without so much as looking for a part time job:rolleyes:

beanilou it has been a very long time since eldest appreciated anything, the youngest is a darling:D

sary also variety, if you get to the stage where all the lunches are repetative then it turns to boredom then carbs then over eating, slowly it goes downhill, look at recipes books on websites for inspiration, protein is always a good blood sugar leveller.:D I never eat white bread, always wholemeal or rye, it is a weaner off it, takes ages in my case, love to toast used to eat the whole loaf if I got away with it but now refuse it, don't buy it, don't miss it wouldn't go as far as to say don't like it but hey it does not rule me now I rule it:D
