Hi all, just signed up on the weekend - Do you get any software that will show you how much MB you have downloaded? or is there free software out there for this, so i can keep tabs on my downloads so i don't overstep the 5 gig limit!

Try NetMeter from a company called ReadError. It's completely free to use and has been mentioned on this site before.

btw - I ordered on Friday, how long before my ADSL modem is delivered?

And any tips on first seting this up as i have always been bound by NTL cable modem in the past

Hi Deefadog,

For the usage question I'd like to point you towards the My Account section on our website. You're able to check your usage there at any time.

Because we want to make sure that you know when you're about to go over your usage allowance we will email you to let you know. We'll also email you again for every GB exceeded.

The hardware is sent on the day that we get the 'go live date' thus provided that there are no problems with the postal service it should arrive a day or two prior to your service going live.

Setting up is actually really simple! All the instructions come with the router and if you're using the USB connection you'll need to install the drivers (which come on a CD ROM enclosed in the package).

Here are a few basic things to keep in mind:

1. If you're using a Macintosh only connect using the Ethernet port.
2. During the first 10 days you're going through a 'testing' period where we're trying to figure out the best speed for your line. You may get slower/more erratic speeds than expected however this should resolve itself by day 11. If you can, leave your router on (your computer doesn't have to be on) for those 10 days.
3. You'll get better results if you connect from your master socket.
4. Make sure that all the phone sockets that are in use in your home are fitted with a microfilter.

It's all pretty simple stuff and it's easy to set up.

off to get my mac from plusnet although just a couple of points please:
what is the turnaround time for answering any queries? i say this as p.n. have taken at present 3 days to answer 1 query outstanding.

is direct debit set up online or by post?

We aim to respond to all queries in 24 hours, however I have seen a few exceptions to this rule. As someone who is active in these forums you can always PM me - I check my PM's several times a day and like to help out the people on MSE.

You can set up your direct debit online through the My Account facility.

Does anyone know, is website traffic included in usage? I mean, if I put a file on my website and people download it, does their downloading get added to my usage?
