  • You are so far wrong it isn't true. My point is, leave this thread alone, don't hang on the coat tails of it.
    ...
Again. Start another thread rather than ruin this very definitive article.
I'd be interested to hear the specific points you think I'm wrong on as I did make a number of them. This thread isn't the appropriate forum to discuss this, however, so feel free to DM me if you wish.
Again. Please stop attacking people for simply answering questions, you aren't helping anyone by doing this.
  • Hi All,

We are purchasing a new kitchen (Houston range from Wickes).

We are on a serious budget, hoping to purchase cheap cabinets and then hopefully will make it up on the appliances, flooring, worktops, taps etc)

My question is, myself and the wife were originally looking for solid wood worktops but decided the ongoing maintenance would be too much so we are contemplating granite or quartz.

We have seen a site close to us in Watford (agandm) and they have some reasonable prices but i have some questions.

    1) do the cabinets need to be strong enough to carry the weight of the granite/quartz, either the black pearl or midnight black? and does anyone know if the cabinets we have chosen will be ok? (am worried the sales people from wickes will give me some !!!! and bull about the cheaper the units the more likely they will be of getting destroyed under the weight and push me to get more expensive cabinets (and therefore more commission for them)

    2) do we need to build the units first and then get someone round to the templating etc?

    Any help would be great!

To answer the bold bit, of course they do, you actually know that without asking. Hope that doesn't sound aggressive, ;)

The cheapest of cheap cabinets are capable of, and will support granite tops,

Most granite suppliers that offer a full service will come and template the kitchen, they have to, to retain their reputation,

The cheapest will just supply as simple as you ask and if you are in error, then, well, they will be long gone.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Its yes and yes to both his questions.

However any 18mm carcase should be strong enough. If someone is using 15mm then ask why.

Thanks, but there is some leeway here.

Just look under the cabinets, are the feet, (mostly screw adjustable ones now), supported on the edge/sidewall of the unit?

The sidewall can take the load, feet under the base plate can't.

This is why the cheapest 25 year old MFI un it where the weight was taken on wedges under the side spine of 15mm chipboard are perfectly suited to heavy stone tops, some stuff such as B&Q will sag under the load unless the feet are set perfectly.

I'd be concerned about any fitter who couldn't set feet perfectly and wouldn't want him fitting wall cabinets.

Please don't make company recommendations in your first ever pole unless you are truly a troll and want to ignore this "tip", ;);)
