We are looking to buy a Granite worktop and these guys (quartzworktopsdirect.com) are the cheapest by far but I am worried they are cheap for a reason. Has anybody dealt with them and can comment on the quality of the Granite and workmanship? Many thanks.
  • Hi Alan,Many thanks for your invaluable advice on Granite worktops.
By any chance, can you recommend a good supplier in Herts/Essex?
    Kindest Regards,
    MrsSP

After looking around at random quartz and granite weve found the following:

Most quartz the mirror/fleck bits are too large.
Wren Kitchens have a quartz with VERY small flecks called midnight Ice but we are unable to find out what make/brand the stone it.

I don't know if it's too late for you, NVRAM, but Wren kitchens get both their granite and quartz from http://www.jrotherhamworktops.co.uk/
where it is marketed as 'Gemini'

I have asked for this topic/thread to be closed.
Alan it seems is long gone, a victim of MSE's anti personal interest policy methinks.

It should become a sticky, not a target of spammers as it presently is:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

I think you are a bit paranoid about what is, and what isn't spam. Having had a cursory glance through the last few pages of comments, I'm struggling to find anything I would regard as such, only people asking and receiving recommendations.
I can only assume my last post in regards to who provided Wren with their granite/quartz triggered this slightly over the top response? I find it really difficult how anyone can possibly regard this as Spam; a poster (NVRAM) asked a question, I was trying to be helpful and answer it as no one else had. I don't work for J Rotheram, nor would I ever buy anything from them as they are too expensive. Your intimidation means I dare not share the names of either of the companies in my area that will do it for getting on for half the price for fear of being accused of being yet another spammer. I don't think that is particularly helpful in what is meant to be a money saving site, so maybe you should consider backing off a bit? Just a thought. :)

I think you are correct as you say, "I dare not share the names of either of the companies in my area that will do it for getting on for half the price".

Look, there is nothing personal here, I happen to think that this was 1 of the most helpful threads within this forum.
    MSE thought different.
A chap who gave totally independant advice and knowledge was hounded for allegedly pushing his business.

So how do you think your post looks?. To me it seems like absolute spam, you may not agree, I don't really care but as you said, rather than read the last few pages, try reading the whole topic, all 21 pages. Then comment.

I have read all of the 21 pages, but that isn't really relevant to this. Your comment was that this thread was presently a target for spammers, which only requires a re-read of the most recent pages to confirm whether this is actually true or not, not the entire thread.
This is a money saving site; people should be able to recommendations for companies that will save people money. Contrary to what you might believe, simply mentioning a company name in relation to a question is not in all cases automatically spam. The only case it would be spam were if I were to work for a company in the field and had a vested interest. As you know this was the reason why Alan was cautioned, which is a shame as from what I read he provided completely impartial advice.
You have to use your own judgement on this, which unfortunately you (and the MSE people who criticized Alan) seem to have lost.
Anyone looking at my first post in relation to J Rotheram would have seen it was simply an answer to a question and I wasn't even recommending them (Hint: Not spam). Anyone looking at my second post, which you described as 'absolute spam' would have seen that I didn't actually name any companies (Hint: Not spam), but even if I did, this site by its very nature should be a forum for people sharing the names of companies that can save people money. Believe it or not, most people on here are intelligent enough to make their own minds up about the legitimacy of posts without the need for a self appointed anti 'spam' troll attacking people for simply trying to share information.
  • Can I ask a quick idiot's question please ?
We have just had a lovely new granite worktop installed. It being Xmastime the man who did it (it is LOVELY) is very busy and his 'lads' were Roumanian (lovely, hard workers) but not very good at English. What I need to know is:
    a) can I put hot things on it out of the oven ?
    b) will oil/butter/grease stain it if I don't wipe it immediately
    c) will lemon juice/vinegar/white wine spills bleach it ?
    d) if I got red wine on it I imagine it would stain so I'd wipe them off at once (if possible)

Its a sort of caramelly colour, with blobs of dark grey so it's not the lovely (but difficult to care for in a hard water area) black sparkly stuff.
I would be very grateful for some answers just to tide me over the Christmas cooking after which I can go back and ask the company for some more information on care. Many thanks....

You are so far wrong it isn't true. My point is, leave this thread alone, don't hang on the coat tails of it.

I haven't lost my judgement, and certainly not of you, (retaliatory but never the less true).

Again. Start another thread rather than ruin this very definitive article.

    Hi morganlefay
    Apologies, I can't claim to have any expert knowledge, but I have been doing a lot of research on this recently, so it no one more qualified answers, here are my best guesses;
    a) Yes, in theory. But with the amount you presumably spent on it, personally I'd say it's really not worth risking putting anything over 150 degrees C on it just in case.
    b) If it has been properly sealed (it should have been, otherwise get it sealed asap), you should be OK.
c)Yes...darker granites are a little bit more resistant to this, but with yours you should wipe anything like that (at least the vinegar and lemon juice) up immediately. Discolour, rather than necessarily bleach, though.
    d)Good idea
