    What new law????
a lot of supermarkets ask people well over drinking age for i.d and have done for a few years.

i worked for asda up till about 3 years ago, one of our last staff meetings was about this, i got dragged over hot coals about a week before handing my notice in cos i didnt ask someone for i.d when he looked older than me :o

last time i went there and was asked for i.d the supervisor on the tills was killing herself laughing, having worked with me since i was 18
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
BH is my best mate too, its ok :)

I trust BH even if he's from Manchester.. ;)

all your base are belong to us
  • What new law????

There is signs up in all my local shops and supermarkets
advising that from the end of may they will ID everybody under
age of 25 for alcohol and cigarettes. That why I put
question mark, as I was unsure if this is just a Scottish
    thing or if applys throughout

Get real! How could someone think a 35 year old is under 18????

It's not a question of whether a 35 year old looks under 18, it's designed to take the guesswork out of the process and avoid the problems that the OP has had. A lot of the people who work in supermarkets are young and might not be confident asking someone who looks 'borderline' for ID, whereas a policy that everyone who looks under 35 gets their ID checked means that there is less 'accusation' in the request. Also, given that it's the individual member of staff who is liable for prosecution, I can understand why employees would want such a system in place to protect themselves.

Having said that, I have a friend who is nearly 40, but petite and very fresh faced and she gets asked quite frequently - even people who have known her years are surprised at her age, so it's not always easy.
  • Well someone who works for Tesco has now read this - so to recap

you had a problem with ONE member of staff who could have handled to situation better and because of that ALL Tesco workers are retards

and because a manager didn't feel it necessary to attend to one of you issues and trusted a supervisor to handle it and get rid of you

the stores are too crowded with animals??? to give you a pleasant shopping experience

I can only agree that you must vote with your feet because your attitude stinks and I am sure the staff at the store concerned would be more than happy were you never to darken their door again - I will not mention the Think 25 training that was recently done at all stores which has made some staff nervous to serve alcohol full stop - as you already know of these intiatives having trained retards yourself.

Please excuse any spelling mistakes or grammatical errors after all I do work for Tesco

it being quite common doesnt make it right.

ageist in that anyone young took ages to be seen to and anyone old like her had their machines sorted straight away, she made a big scene of the fact despite being 28 and the only things i had on me were my bank card (a visa debit card which no bank will issue to under 18's) and car keys (for the car i drove there in) and the fact that she clearly stated i looked in my mid 20s but not over 25 (sorry but legal drinking age in this country is 18)

i was told there would be no problem trying to buy alcohol if someone there knew i was how old i said i was (i know a few of the staff) and when i got there she had called security to prevent me from purchasing.

i should have got her name and phoned into the store manager to lodge an official complaint really but voting with my feet is next best thing i suppose

I would say that the issue is more that the situation was handled poorly than a problem with being IDed in itself - I would argue that any member of checkout staff is within their rights to ID someone if they aren't completely sure that they are over 18, but the problems with the till after that seem to be largely due to the member of staff's inability to resolve the ID issue. If it's convenient for you to vote with your feet, then I understand your desire to do so, but otherwise it may be worth speaking to someone about their policy on alcohol sales.

I think you will find several banks issue Visa Debit cards (yes thats right Visa Debit not Electron) to under 18s. Lloyds TSB do on there under 19s account: http://www.lloydstsb.com/current_accounts/under_19s_account.asp and so do Barclays and other banks. Plus you only have to be 17 to drive so thats no proof either.

I personally find the Staff at my Tesco's obnoxiously RUDE to all their customers, with exactly the same stuffy "your just one customer" attitude that you are so proud to announce on a public forum, I guess I must be that "2nd" customer your ranting about here. Exactly how many customers "count" in Tesco, before it becomes problematic?

IMO the best reaction to this would be to walk out, leaving your stuff at the till, and not go back. Pretty soon the supermarkets will change their policy, if this is happening on a regular basis.

I've been Id'ed a few times in the past couple of years (I'm 28).

Luckily all the staff who have asked for ID have been really polite about it, although I'm paying with a credit card, clearly have a car and a 3 year old! non of those things are proof that I'm over a certain age - but they're pretty good indicators!

all the times that it has happened, I've bought my shopping, loaded it into the car, gone back into the shop, got my alcohol and paid for it at a different till.

It's a pain in the posterior, but I'd rather that I was inconvenience slightly than the rules being slackened and say my daughter was able to buy booze when she's a teenager.

I think customer service is going downhill generally. Tesco's aren't stunning, but neither are the other supermarkets round here, I even got moaned at by Screwfix for taking back unused items within the 28 days they give you, as "the staff have to restock it, not head office"
Maybe the staff are having to deal with more unpleasant customers, but they are certainly making more for the future as well.
