If you sent it recorded delivery, you should be able to claim compensation. Check it on the Royal Mail website. (Advice courtesy of DS1!)

    Good luck.

    Nhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

Well it goes from bad to worse today when I get a letter from the Employment Tribunal Service telling me that because part of my previous employer's company went into liquidation that there are now additional respondents (the administrators) who have to be sent my claim form and have 28 days to reply. Nghaaaaaaaaaa

Just over a week ago I was expecting a default judgement in my favour, now I'm facing a long and drawn out legal battle against multiple parties all of which is going to take more time than I'd care for it to :(

How would I get them to pay back the bank charges? They are for returned DDs cos no £ to cover them.
I really am trying to get control back - BUT I hadn'tthought of reducing the DD amounts. Will they let me do that? How does it work?
    Very good idea thank you.

ksh123, there are LOADS of posts on here about it and the https://www.bankactiongroup.co.uk forum is the best place to start. Basically the charges aren't legal, so threaten them with (and/or start) legal action and they will back down.

Even if you don't have ££ to cover your DD's, it doesn't cost them £30 in charges to deal with that problem, that's what you contest. Go sue and good luck!

    Hi everyone,

Its been a bit of a rubbish day today! I don't know if anyone keeps up-to-date with the news in the Good News Thread (we're all so miserable here - ha ha!) but some of you will know that I've been doing a lot of babysitting recently and over the past 8 days have made £130 - which sounds fantastic, but....

I've been babysitting over the past week for a family having A LOT of problems - the mother is an incontinent alcoholic who the father has kicked out...but...she is next door (adjoined house) with her (dying) mother and father. The dad (of the kids) works very funny hours and so far I've worked on Tuesday evening last week, all day on Sunday from 6am to 4pm and last night from 6.30pm to 7am this morning (sleep over) then straight to work.

The babysitting bit is fine, kids are lovely and quiet but I just can't deal with all the family problems that I am getting drawn into. I was rung and told to keep the kids away from the window last night as their mother had jumped out of the window next door and her father had had to call an ambulance. That's not just it - the kids' dad is constantly late home (after he says he'll be) - this morning I'd asked him countless times if he could promise he would be home by 6.30am as I had to get home and get ready for work before my train. You guessed it, he was home at 7.05am - very frustrating as of course, I couldn't just leave.

He also tends to ask me to do housework and I 'm not trying to be a jobsworth here but this is a bit too much to ask - he even asks me if I'll make him cups of tea before he leaves the house! He's a bit all over the place - asked me to fix his internet connection last night (I had no idea and didn't even attempt it). His house also smells and overall the whole situation makes me uneasy.

I mean its good money but I am getting far too drawn into a very complicated personal family situation and this isn't in (I feel) the 'job description' of a babysitter. My OH isn't happy with me being involved in this situation and I feel so uneasy about it all (especially the dad saying make sure you put the inside lock on as she - the mother - might try to break in, one evening!). Anyway, I have written the dad a letter as I'm no use at difficult conversations in person or on the phone and will post through his door tonight, just saying I'm getting too involved and I'm not happy. Not easy to do as my instinct is to help out but I feel I've enough to worry about just now.

Anyway that's my story! Another bad news story from today to follow!

Oh my gosh! That's really bad. Maybe you should inform social services, but I suppose that they must already know. It's a shame the whole situation, very saddening. But I suppose on the good side, and I don't want to put you on a guilt trip here, at least you're there to care for the kids. Some other babysitter may not care so much.

I feel really sorry that you've been drawn in to the whole nasty mess, but I think your letter idea is a good one. Set the terms now, and in the future it should be easier to deal with.

Good luck! I'm very intrigued to know how this turns out, please keep us all informed of what happens :)

Next story! This one WILL be shorter!

I sold a Nigella Lawson pestle and mortar recently for £21 plus £6 postage. I posted it on Monday and the buyer emailed me today to say it had broken in the post so I've had to refund it. I had already transferred most of my paypal money into my bank account - ready to make a PIN money payment on my credit card soon so had to scrabble around to get the right amount to pay her back and am now worrying about paying my eBay fees (as I had left part of this refund money to do this).

More frustrating as its taken me about six weeks to sell the bl**dy item as I had sold it first (for £5 more!) to a non paying bidder and had to open a formal eBay dispute etc. etc.

I know its my fault as I probably didn't pack it well but I did wrap it tightly in loads of bubble wrap and put in a sturdy box so I also feel that the post office/Royal Mail might be partly to blame!

    Grrrrr...

Ahh crap, it just goes from bad to worse :( As suggested, get the item sent back to you. Also, if you have a proof of postage, and the item was sent 1st class you are still covered for £30 from Royal Mail (if not covered for higher amounts from enhanced postage services). Does your refund include postal charges?

I had a DVD drive I purchased off eBay go missing (never arrived) and have had to tit about endlessly with RM to get it sorted but I'm nearly there. I did want proof that the sender sent it, so got him to speak to me and got him to scan and send the proof of postage etc. Unfortunately the £30 doesn't quite cover the whole cost but it's better than a kick in the

my bad news barcalys have sent me a default notice for my loan saying they want full payment in 14 days, they have sent this even though we are paying them through b&e

So long as you're making regular payments, there's very little legal action they can take. If they apply for an order or warrant of some kind, the judge just won't have it provided you're still paying them TBH.

    Go get 'em tiger!! Rwaah!!

Bad news is that i may not get sponsored for University by my employer even though the company stress that they are very proactive in staff development and have sponsored 3 other males in the section over the last few years. And the female director wonders why all the female staff leave her directorate and she is left with no higher female managers.

Speak to her about it, tell her that it's totally unfair and discriminatory. Surely she can pull some strings for you? Good luck!!

    my bad news.

After last week earning an extra £300 in various ways, yesterday I got my payslip, the first one after getting my P45 in, and they have taken an extra £80 odd off me in tax - this after I got £68.80 tax rebate last week!!!!

Why give it in one hand to take it from the other???

I've also had to pay £150 on glasses & I'd put the £68.80 on my CC right away so I'm actually down (bought a payg mobile yesterday before getting home to find the payslip)
