My postman dropped a card silently through my door that said Parcel was too big to post and nobody was in to collect, so would return it to depot, unfortunately for him, I happened to see it slip to the floor, I instantly ran out to him and he stammered slightly as I said "you didn't knock".

I was not surprised to find he didn't even have the parcel, leaving it at the depot for me to collect. (so much for paying extra on postage). This is common practice apparently, or so he said.

Marleyboy that is not common practice. I have seen postmen do this when they have a regular round and know the customers well. ex: Oh Mrs Smith works Tues - Thurs, I'll card it for her, but if your postman doesn't know you well enough then he shouldn't be doing it. We have one woman who gets about 6 parcels a day on one route, we know she works mon, wed and friday, we don't take her parcels out on those days as it would mean returning them, which we strictly shouldn't do but as it's a certainty that she isn't home then we do it (with her permission i may add). You should complain to the delivery office when something like this happens imo.

I find in handy when I'm not in for the postie/delivery driver to hand my parcel to a neighbour - but thats because my neighbours are nice!
Back in my hometown, my friend has the worst neighbours anyone could wish for, who would jump at the chance to 'take' a parcel - literally! But as people say, the postie/driver doesnt know this, so a note on the door is probably the best idea!

    as said not common practice

heres a nice flip side for you
carded a packet last tuesday, customer requests a redelivery for today
now i know i carded other packets on Saturday for them so i take everything out
was a full load making half a mail sack
get to the door and tell them i brought all their packets so no need to go to the depot and to ignore the card from saturday
at which point they have a go at me as trhey might have went today to get them!!
as i said to him he had requested a redelivery so surely would be in waiting
and i quote " sometimes i dont bother being in for the redeliveries as its free anyway"
well guess who wont be getting any favours from now on

I was not too pleased, as I had took the day off work specifically for the parcel to arrive, I couldn't afford to take another day off work at the time, what annoyed me most was that the postman hadnt even bothered to deliver the package and was relying on the thought that I would be out, he deliberately tip-toed up to the door and discretely posted the "You wasn't in" card, along with the rest of the mail. It was by sheer luck I happened to be passing the letter box as the note was slipped in.

I didnt make a complaint, as I didnt want the risk of those kind of repurcussions, whereas I wouldnt get any post in return.

But Angry I was, you could see the "Ive been caught out here" look on his face, so his reply was to say it was normal to post such cards if the parcel was deemed to big to post.

It lost my faith in Royal Mail's determination to ensure postage would arrive, it seemed to me he took one look at the package and thought "I cant be bothered carrying that". Which would be fair enough had they sent someone in a van later in the day, rather than just leaving it at the depot for collection.

I'm actually about to put a complaint in about my current postman. I'm not someone who habitually moans - going to the sorting office, trekking up the street to a neighbour - I'll do either.

I'm currently marking KS2 SATs... thankfully most of the papers get delivered to my door by ParcelForce, but the admin paperwork goes by Royal Mail - and it's quite a lot of bits and bobs. I've made sure I'm around the last couple of weeks so I can answer the door to the postie and not have kids' papers they worked hard on lingering in the system for longer than necessary... but the postman last week left an admin package just balanced on the doorstep (we don't have a secluded garden) when I was in the house, and again today I've been in all day (sat next to the doorbell dinger so no excuse) I've gone out to go to the gym and only happened to glance up the side alley to the house to find the next package chucked down there - no note through the door, nothing... I rarely even look down there unless it's a Friday and I'm seeing if the veg box guy's been when I'm out.

I'm cross because no note was left through the door telling me where to look, I've been in all day, and potentially that could have been pretty ikky information to leave on someone's doorstep (it wasn't fortunately - just dummy scripts for marking consistency checking). I also don't particularly like my full name and address sat on the doorstep ready for the taking by all and sundry.

So yeah - complaint going in for this cos it's ridiculous.

when i worked for citylink we were told to do anything to avoid bringing parcels back to the depot.

    the orders were

    1 try proper delivery

2 get a neighbour to sign, a neighbour is anyone up to 10 houses away

3 leave parcel in safe place

    4 leave parcel in dustbin

I have just been on the phone to city link just now as they attempted to deliver a parcel. I asked them could they leave it with my neighbour on the next attempt and they said they can't and they will leave a card through my door again if no answer to say it's been taken back to the depot.

The girl told me the reason was in case the parcel got stolen, I told her that my neighbours will only take parcels in if a card has been left through the door to let me know, and I do trust them. She told me parcel will eventually be returned to the sender after so many attempts.

The PF stuff isn't the issue - it's the other stuff that's coming via Royal Mail that's being abandoned on my doorstep.
