Navvie are you sure the neighbors even got the goods?

I know parcel guys who nick parcels quite easily like that.

We went on holiday one year and our neighbours parked their second car in our drive so it looked like someone was home. During the week a birthday present arrived for my son and the postie (not the brightest) left it somewhere "safe and secure".

We got home to a card through the door saying there was a parcel and a knock on the door from the neighbour holding up a destroyed package with bits of video tape hanging out.

The card from the postie read "parcel left under the wheel arch of your car." The Post Office denied liability because no-one would be that stupid. Got a cheque for £25 10 days later when they received the card proving that yes people are that stupid!

So neighbours taking in parcels is, in the vast majority of cases, safe, secure and very very convenient. IMHO obviously.

    s'not navvie's problem, that...

it's what I said earlier up the thread ***looks up***
if you order goods which will be too big for letter box and you tell the person/company from who yoyu are ordering that those goods are not to be left with neighbours or outside - well you've done your bit. I am happy for neighbours to take my stuff in (creative postie gave them my new CD because he got muddled up t'other day) and I am happy to take stuff in for them but I am not skanky so there you go...

mind you I have keys for NDN's house anyway - and have been in twice fairly recently to disable their burglar alarm...

I would prefer NOT to go in and usually drag DS or DD with me - I go in, deal with alarm and check the downstairs windows and doors are secure. Then I come out. Then I phone them.
In the time they've had the alarm it's only activated 3 times (that I have dealt with) but I work part time and am around most weekends as am sad and have no life so am in here sat night while they are at a wedding reception...
    I have lovely neighbours though.

I have just been on the phone to city link just now as they attempted to deliver a parcel. I asked them could they leave it with my neighbour on the next attempt and they said they can't and they will leave a card through my door again if no answer to say it's been taken back to the depot.

The girl told me the reason was in case the parcel got stolen, I told her that my neighbours will only take parcels in if a card has been left through the door to let me know, and I do trust them. She told me parcel will eventually be returned to the sender after so many attempts.

but you cant exactley blame them can you, they want to make sure you get the parcel, how do they know that you and your neighbour arent colluding together to get the item for free form the sender eg your neighbour takes parcel in and you call the sender saying you dont have the parcel when you do but you want a freebie, im not saying its something you do but i think theyre covering theyre backs, maybe they're had alot of people trying it on

This was a replacement for an item sent to me a couple of weeks ago, they left the item with a neighbour then.

Anyway when delivery was attempted a 2nd time - after arranging for it to be delivered to my sisters address who lives in the next road to me - it was then left with my neighbour, therefore my sister waited in all day for the delivery! The item was from Amazon, and I got in touch with them to ask for it to be redelivered to my sisters address, and they said they would inform city link.

My current postman is very good, no complaints at all, but the last one was the pits. If a package was too big for the box, instead of taking it back, or leaving it in the woodshed (8 feet away) as I'd repeatedly asked, or with a neighbour, he'd just leave it out in the rain. After formally complaining twice and having two packages ruined I told him I'd had enough and if he did it again I'd bash him. Oddly enough, he didn't.

Nothing tops ParcelFarce, however. One time I had taken the day off work to take a delivery and saw the van draw up. The monkey that emerged not only failed to knock on the door, he couldn't even be bothered to walk up the drive - a whopping 20 feet. Instead, he took the parcel, dropped it on the pavement and drove off.

Why can't people communicate with neighbours anymore? I don't understand it. Surely it's a nice thing for your neighbour to keep something safe for you? The amount of neighbour disputes I hear about at work everyday is unbelievable. People don't communicate anymore they just call the police or do something spiteful in response and it becomes an escalating game of one-up-manship.

I was very impressed with my postman today. I went out first thing to get bread and milk and saw the postie chatting to a bloke up the road. When I got back, the postman was outside my front door scribbling away. He said: "oh just in time, Ive got a parcel that needs signing for. I saw you drive out of the road when I was talking to Mick up the road, and thought Id missed you." Now hows that for friendly personal service! He knows the names of people on his round, recognises them by sight and feels bad that hes missed giving them their parcels.

Give that man a pay rise.

I guess it depends on the neighbourhood, Where I used to live, my house was burgled twice, the second time I discovered all my stuff stored in my neighbours loft.

Some people prefer not to get too into knowing the neighbours (from both sides of the fence), anything from borrowing sugar to mind my kids are potentials, I now live in a nice cul-de-sac with quiet neighbours, I dont know their names as much as they dont know mine, sure if theyre house was being burgled I would happily report or even scare the burglars off (as good neighbours do keep an eye out for each other), but as I cannot determine who can or cannot be trusted within the neighbourhood, I choose not to listen to the local gossip, not to get too pally with the neighbours (nothing short of a smile and good morning will suffice).

If I was asked to pass a parcel on to a neighbour I would have no objections, should a neighbour pass a parcel to me, then likewise.

But I would prefer that NOT to be the case, simply because I dont know if neighbour A or B is trustworthy (how many conmen will first say to their victims "you can trust me"). I assume they think likewise about myself, which is a sure beat way of ensuring nothing is stolen.
