I think an independent midwife will be more likely to go along with what I want because a) she'll be employed directly by me, b) being independent she is not dictated to by NHS trust protocols and c) chances are one of the reasons she's independent is to give women the choices they want.
Also an independent midwife has more time for you. Although my midwife was lovely she never had time and she wasn't able to answer questions like why I needed a second GTT (and another midwife I saw could only say that it was "trust policy").She also okayed my birth plan (eventually at 38 weeks despite my having written it at about 20 weeks) but then the midwife I had in hospital wasn't happy about not clamping or cutting the cord so got a doctor in to debate it with me while I was in labour.
Also if I did have to transfer then my independent midwife would be able to go with me as support. I'm a bit distrustful of NHS midwives since they completely ignored my wishes. Especially as some of them were in the NICE guidelines as what they should be doing anyway. ok i dont come on here for like a couple of days and theres about 15 new pages and a new thread!!! you girls can TALK!! lol
so today started badly - i had an interview and baby was sleeping so i went to get myself dressed and ready and of course baby wakes earlier than normal. i get him sorted and stand him up and what does he do - fall straight back onto the (tiled) floor with an almighty bang right on his head! he frightened the life outta me, but he seemed alright after a wee minute so i was cuddling him and brought him down to bedroom and set him on floor and he squealed so i set him on the bed with a few toys - i was standing right beside the bed and bent down to zip up my boots and the next thing i know he tumbled to the floor - luckily landing on his bum - cue more screaming - me in a panic, feeling awful, shushing baby and trying to get dressed and sorted for interview. aaagh.
then i was watching him really closely to make sure he was alright - he didnt vomit or sleep or anything and theres no lumps or bumps, so i think i can relax now. he's sleeping now, but normally has an afternoon sleep so thats ok.
and its his 1st birthday tomorrow!! cant believe my baby's 1!
now i'm gonna have to try and catch up a little bit with all you chatterboxes.DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY

thanks that's all useful interesting info. My experience of a home birth with NHS midwives was that you get more one to one time than in a hospital delivery. there were 3 of them there at one point, just for me!!!! but I think you mean in ante-natal care, so I guess that's not so relevant!:o
I'm a geek too susan, I subscribed to the british journal of obstetrics during pregnancy and read avidly! and kept popping up on the preg thread with random useless bits of info (sami, mfd, redmel and emlou all start nodding!;))
There's a fab website about homebirth, but I think you might have already mentioned it on your blog, so I won't post linkie yet...
