Car Boot Threads - OS or Ebay?

Quite so Quackers, post it in the Scotland Board and I'll rally the troops to
"Save Our Carboot Threads" or how about "Save the Scotland 2"
oh and no matter the result, they ain't moving :rotfl:0 -
troo wrote:A lot of people who buy/sell at car boots don't do it because it's OS, they do it to get a bargain or to make some quick cash (I mean people generally, I'm not talking just about MSErs).
If I decided to raise money by carbooting to pay off a loan, I wouldn't post it on the Loans or Debt-Free Wannabe boards, it wouldn't fit because it's not about loans or debts, it's about selling my stuff.
I voted for the ebay board because it fits better there but I think it should be re-named to include auctions, jumble sales, car boots and anywhere else you can buy and sell your stuff - not just online thingies.
IMO
I don't understand it when people say - "please don't move my thread, I live on this board". As if every other board is evil or somethingIf someone says this, surely they know they've posted it in the wrong place
I don't understand thatEveryone can join in, it's just on a different board.
Perfectly phrased by by troo and apprentice tycoon! If I was going to sell anything at a carboot, jumble etc. The ebay board is the first place I'd ask in regard to pricing and haggling tactics. I vote for the Ebay board, with a name change to reflect the whole context of buying and selling, and not necessarily online.apprentice_tycoon wrote:I think that there should be a sub-board on ebay that dealt with all non internet selling, buying and giving which would include car boot sales, jumble sales, 'real' auctions, freecycle etc.
The other point I am going to make here, is that just because someone posts a thread with Old Style or OS in the title DOESN'T necessarily mean that IT IS suited to OS. We do our best to read every post on here, believe me. But we are only human and can only do so much, so if that means from time to time, we move something and a member is in disagreement, best advice is to share your concerns with the forum team: abuse@moneysavingexpert.com
We make every decision in the best interest of OS and there are a lot of discussions which go on behinds scenes as to how best achieve this.
As the saying goes, you can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time.0 -
It's great to see all the different points of view and just as interesting to see just how many people have taken the time to vote.Mrsbojangles wrote:... I started a thread back in January about turning trash to cash, which I thought was an OS way of making moneytroo wrote:.... What I meant was, that I don't understand why OSers didn't follow the thread to it's new home instead of ignoring it just because they don't want to leave OS.... This all sounds better in my head, somewhere between my brain and the keyboard it's getting a bit lost lol.
And it is a valid point (well presented
)

I still believe that the ebay board is the best home for boot sales threads and all others like it since there is a wealth of sales knowledge and experience to be mined there; from both a buyer's and a seller's point of view. Setting prices, marketing, presentation on the one hand and spotting bargains, browsing and haggling on the other....
Soolin highlighted the various issues arising (see post #15 above) but even then, I would add a fourth element:
~ Which board would you go to for discussing your boot fair shopping list/budget and how you intend to utilise (recycle) those items in the home & garden?
... I would look in OS.
Some Old stylers will be on the look out for slow cookers, bread machines, pressure cookers, sewing machines, so that they *can* make and do more for themselves and it is mainly non-Os'er who sell these items at BF. ( :shhh: if they realised the demand for them, they'd put their prices up and then it wouldnt' be so moneysaving for OS'er :shhh: ) OS'er wouldn't look on Ebay for heavy items such as those, because the postage would outweigh the potential savings.squeaky wrote:... Just to a reminder as to how old shopping is I've included one of my favourite taglines here - just coming up for its 2000th birthday:-

Surrounding the issues of being a seller of items, I agree, threads are definately more appropriate in a "Selling to make extra Cash, not Business" style forum (whether that be Ebay, Amazon, Boot Fairs, Craft Fairs, etc.) as it generates many questions - as evidenced by the Ebay board already! By the same token, online auctions need a buyers aspect because of the issues that can arise too.
Where to find BF's I believe should be left for the poster to decide, because that comes down to an individuals perception but as importantly, their particular needs ie: in the Scotland example given by Edinburghlass.
The main confusion really is when it comes to where to discuss everything else!! It would be a pity if the votes were being decided because of particular board loyalties (as highlighted by troo).
I do not wish to sell at a BF and I think it will be some time (if ever) that I need to know where there's a BF in Scotland/Ireland/Wales/England/Oop North and I really don't have any issues regarding buying from a Boot Fair (have already book marked sites outlining my rights).
But I did want to discuss, with likeminded others, what they will be looking out for, if they got it, what they might use/recycle it for (pick up ideas, tips), how they budget for it, what sort of prices they are paying (to guage what is reasonable/not for haggling purposes). Hence a 2006 Wish List thread so all OS geared BF discussions could take place in one thread to avoid several cluttering up the boards. Someone very kindly gave me a tip I hadn't thought of straight after I'd posted - extremely moneysaving, definately an OS method of doing things and considering it was for an OS craft based on recycling, IMHO it seemed obvious that it belonged in the Moneysaving Old Style forum~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

As far as I can make out, Car boot Sale threads have a long standing history of being posted on the Old Style board. Everyone appeared to be happy with that until you posted yours Queenie. For some reason the board guides decided it was not appropriate for the Old Style board and moved it to the E-bay board. Since that post was moved others have started and been left on Old Style.
That is what I find hard to understand about the Old Style forum. There are inconsistencies in how posts are dealt with. Queenies thread was moved while others are allowed to remain.A couple of days ago I had a thread (lidl offers) moved while another, posted before mine was allowed to remain.
The more I read the Old Style forum, the more I see these inconsistencies. It may not be the intention, but it does come across as, if your face fits you can post what you want. If it doesn't well tough!

Actually you'll find that I posted in to that other thread at much the same time as I moved yours to say that I was going to move it. Then something came up and so it was a few hours before I realised that I hadn't moved it.
Queenie's thread was moved and she queried it, so as I said in my post earlier - after contacting the form team for an opinion we refrained from moving posts until we heard from them.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Thank you for the reply squeaky.
I know I am not the alone in thinking that the board guides on Old Style have different rules for different members.
At risk of sounding pedantic, did something come up here too?

Yep...
..the sun came out and I decided to do a bit of garening while I had the chance.
Clearly I forgot to move it when I came back. Thanks for the reminder.
Edit: I also forgot to forward it for possible inclusion in the weekly tips email too so thanks againHi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. Hi guys,
I'm very quickly trying to reply to a couple of points but haven't read all the posts for a couple of days so you'll have to forgive me if I seem to be ignoring a point or two.
I just put OS and eBay board as options because those were the ones that came up in the emails we've received from people. I've not heard any complaints from people that these threads would be better off on Shop But Don't Drop but obviously if anyone thinks that may be a better idea then let's think about it. I think adding it to the poll now though would just skew the results though.
Of course, there are several boards these could go on. What we're trying to do here is come to a compromise or try to please the majority of people. As ark's already said you can't please all of the people all of the time.
And as I've said further up the thread, BGs are given a set of guidelines to follow though obviously each board on the forum has its own quirks and nature and what's done sometimes does change from board to board. The BGs interpret these guidelines according to the board they're on. Please don't knock them for essentially doing what we've asked them to do and please remember though many of them do use the forum a lot, they don't work for the site, they're volunteers and this is by no means a full-time job for them. They're BGs, not moderators, so they can't be expected to (and we don't want them to) read every thread.
Also please remember there are 3 BGs on this board and they're not clonesThere will be times when they can't discuss a move between them and one BG may move something that maybe one of the others wouldn't so please don't think it's something personal. At the end of the day it's just down to personal opinion.
